Eric Valentine Talks QOTSA Songs For The Deaf

Post by Holy Schnikes »

Excellent article posted on Josh Newton's excellent blog/tumblr (is there a difference :idk:). May be old but I'd never read it...

Check out that mic setup in the pic.

No problem. :thumb:

That bit about the separate cymbal tracking was pretty interesting. I've never read about a band/engineer employing this trick but I've probably heard it unknowingly on several recordings.

Yep, that's where it was originally pulled from. I've never check out Gearslutz before but if they're posting shit like this on a regular basis, I should visit.

Side Note: Anyone's eyes go crazy when they read that white on black? Looked at the tumblr forever, closed my laptop, and the text was still there, temporarily burnt into the ol' retinas for quite some time...

Still one of my favourite of all times hard rock albums. Its pure genius, and the fact that Grohl drummed makes it that much better
So this turned into another devi thread...

This is sick! QOTSA has such a killer sound. Saw them live recently for that self titled remaster tour... best show I've ever seen!

Saw that one myself, top notch! The only one better I've seen was the SFTD tour in 2002. It was my first experience seeing those dudes in action live and they've yet to top it.

Same goes for that album. Queens have always come up with some awesomely unique tones and recording methods to obtain those tones. While I love their entire catalog, SFTD stands above the rest imo, an amazing job of capturing that band in all their glory.

Thanks for the link
The "cymbaless" approach to recording comes a long way.
Specially in early 80´s stuff as done by joy division and the cure (Think 17 seconds album)

That was a pretty interesting read, I love that album. Tracking the cymbals separately seems like a weird thing to do, but the drum sound on the album is amazing so I guess it worked.

Queens of today is a far cry from Queens of ten years ago.

But Homme's definitely on a different trip now, so more power to him.

Agreed, although I've been listening to Era Vulgaris with a new appreciation lately.

I'm sure Josh could've kept regurgitating old Queens so it's best he moved on, imo, for better or worse...

After Blues, Sky Valley, QOTSA S/T, Rated R and SFTD dude can do whatever the hell he wants.

Era Vulgaris has some keepers. I also love how they totally bit the drum sound from Joe Cocker's Woman to Woman (aka 2pac's California Love) for Turning On The Screw:
