School me on phasers
OK,so the following are some of my favorite phase tones ever. I know the source of these tones, but they're maybe out of my range right now(vintage stuffs). What will get me close to the following examples:

Well played, sir. Well played.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

Check out some demos of the Whetstone, that thing sounds awesome and is extremely versatile. Hell, I wish I had two of them.
I'm very intrigued by the Infanem Faye Sing as well, it's got both crazy out-there psychedelic sounds as well as some very beautiful vocal sounds judging from the demos I've heard.

Well Bilyl Corgan used a Mutron Bi-phase, I don't know what Tonni Iomi used, but I would get a phase 90, calssic 8 stage phaser, and have it modded to true bypass. oR the rochester orange box which is a phase 90 clone with true bypass and some other stuff too.

Corgan also used a EHX Polyphase, Bad Stone & MXR Phase 100.
Personally, I have a soft spot for the Bad Stone, as some DIYers will know.

I'm sure a clone could be made on one of my boards or I don't think the vintage models go for that much.

according to a couple of different sources i Googled up, Ernie Isley used the Maestro PS-1A--which sounds about right, because it sounds different to most stuff you hear from that time period--on "Who's That Lady" along with a Roger Mayer Octavia and a Big Muff. you're not going to get the PS-1A sound out of a Phase 90 because the PS-1A is a six-stage phaser and the Phase 90 is a four-stage phaser. a Phase 100 or other six-stage phaser could get close, or another phaser with a six-stage setting like the Faye Sing or the TC Phaser XII.

Pretty sure the Isley Brothers ting was a ram's head muff and a Maestro PS-1. That's my favourite phaser, but it's frikkin huge. Somebody should clone it in a smaller box.
I love phasers -- have loads of them.
But, Whirlwind Orange Box -- vintage phase 90 but TB and ~$80.
You're done.

Phaser is the one waveform that does not seems to care if you plug in a bass or a guitar.

The design is actually pretty simple for a Masetro... standard 6 Stage FET Based Phaser, only annoying thing about it is its power supply requirements (Bipolar 12V) so it'd either need a redesign or a charge pump and that you'd have to match 6 FETs (The originals are now out of production but there should be a modern alternative).
I recon that'd fit in a 1590BB, no bigger than an MXR Phase 100.

Re: School me on phasers
the Bad Stone and the BiPhase in dual mode are also six-stage phasers (the BiPhase does 2x6 stage or 1x12 stages). so i'm gonna go out on a limb and say you want a six-stage phaser.

I'd be inclined to agree, MXR Phase 100, Bad Stone, Biphase, Maestro PS-1, all 6 stage phasers.

Hrmmm...I know that Isley used the Maestro on most stuffs,BUT didn't he use a Roland Jet Phaser on "Who's That Lady"? And on Plume, didn't Corgan use the Maestro ps1A? Yeah,Devi-I actually owned that phaser once upon a time(Maestro),and it was awesome,to be sure. I guess I just wasn't crazy about having only 3 speed options. I don't think I've ever heard any Phase 90 demos that got close to anything other than Tony Iommi's tone on Megalomania. Looking into the Whirlwind, the Whetstone, and Grand Orbiter.

Re: School me on phasers
i've just lately come to realize that for me it's all about the number of stages of phasing, and more is better. i'm currently trying to convince myself that the phaser settings on my Yamaha rackmounts and my script Phase 100 cover my phasing needs so i don't have to go find a used TC Phaser XII for teh Slowdivez.

Then you need the PS-1B

It depends, I like the subtleness of the Phase 45 sometimes but if you want a Full swooshy phase sound then yeah, you're gunna want more stages.
Personally, i'm not hugely in to phase, it can be nice when used appropriatley though...
Modulation though, i'm all about Chorus & Flanger (which I know some people hate).
