Penny Pedals LowFuzz v2 info

Post by TweedBassman »

same exact circuit and mojo-filled transistors (lolz) but with new graphics, layout, circuit boards etc. to help keep the pedal in-expensive, it will have the same 'knobs across the back' layout as the Fingerprint. this will allow me to buy more parts in bulk that are similar, and eliminate the roll-bar across the top.

i've been sandbagging on these for a while but i've finally gotten off my ass and everything should be awesome. first ones will be available in about 2 weeks to those that have requested them previously, then they'll be up on the site with no wait by the end of spring. :ewok: :hobbes: :animal:

it has a bass control knob, which is a simple high pass filter; at the max setting, it lets ALL the low end in. unfortunately, the circuit 'farts out' a bit with low notes on a bass. you can obviously dial out whatever low end you want with the EQ knob, but then you do lose a bit of deep low end.

actually, here's a sound clip i did a while ago. jazz bass - lowfuzz - yamaha BA100II - ampeg 6x10.

listen in hi fidelity with good headphones or nice speakers to hear the low end. the low end is all there, but there's not a ton of gain and it's got it's own tone sorta.

Nice, sounds pretty good to me, what are the biggest differences between the LF and FF?

ahh gotcha.

they are COMPLETELY different. fingerprint is IC based with asymmetrical clipping and fixed EQ (little bit of a bass cut); LowFuzz is a linear design, single vintage germanium transistor with high pass EQ and voltage starve.

the fingerprint is medium/high gain, hazy but clear fuzz; the lowfuzz is a lot mellower and can get almost clean.

they sound killer together too!

here's a crappy quality clip of the two together; first, the riff clean, then the lowfuzz on a medium setting, then the fingerprint on a medium setting, then together:

special thanks to Dave Jordan for the new graphics.

the roll bar looked great and worked pretty well, but there were three problems:

1. my supply ran out, and the next cheapest place was more money.

2. it took a lot of time to do... looks easy, but remember you have to load all the guts and knobs first, then wiggle all the mounting hardware inside the pedal around the electronics etc... oye.

3. most importantly... when you stepped on the pedal, if you pressed hard on the roll bar the pedal had a tendency to tip over backwards a little, ripping it off your board in the heat of battle. this design achieves the same purpose (no knobs to step on) while eliminating that worry.

That's slick! Did you paint the knobs? Also is that vinyl or a screenprint?

Top notch man!

thanks!

knobs come in white already, and the boxes are pre-powdercoated. the graphics are vinyl, just stick them on, so it's a pretty easy build now.
