i don't drum much, but it's dear to my heart. i'm not a power drummer by any means, and my influences reflect that as well as the fact that i'm not really into Great Big Drums that much. my favoritest drummer is Dannie Richmond, who played with Charles Mingus. my drumming has also been hugely influenced by Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead's tendency to military snap-rolls at the end of verses/choruses and to play 12/8 accents over everything, and by Russell Kunkel's thundering toms-with-brushes and general yeoman work serving the songs on the early James Taylor albums. i'm also a great fan and exceedingly poor emulator of Jim Gordon's playing, and for sheer metronomicity while still being musical i admire Dave Mattacks of Fairport Convention, who i think of when i try to keep it simple/effective. and like everybody of my generation who plays rock drums, i go back to Ringo and Charlie Watts when my well runs dry. i just don't have the kind of physicality as a drummer to play like Elvin Jones or Philthy Animal, so i play relatively quiet drums.

Wow! I am a day late and a dollar short here. However, having started the Quine thread, I must step up and chime in here.

First, Dubkitty, you are a historian, sir! Love your replies on this thread. Due to being in my late 30s, I can certainly relate to different things influencing you at different times.

Like most of you, influences are too many to mention--Bob Mould and J Mascis were the first that really made me take notice and actually want to play guitar (early 90s), followed later by Kevin Shields, Sonic Youth (especially Ranaldo), Mudhoney, and others. Then I went off on a big meta-exploration of my influences' influences (early 2000s), which is what led me to check out Neil Young, Television, Quine/Hell and the Voidoids, etc.

I feel like there are influences where you might actually try and play their songs, just to get into their musical frame of mind. For me this has been Bob Mould above all others, but more recently Television. Then there are influences you just try and absorb by osmosis--I don't know about others, but for me this is usually because the particular player's ability is so far beyond mine (Mascis, Quine) or because their sound/playing is so idiosyncratic and particularistic that there's no point trying to reproduce it enough to actually play it (MBV, Sonic Youth).

When I was living in NYC from '95-'00, I was lucky enough to check out most Sonic Youth side projects. The Lee Ranaldo/William Hooker and Thurston Moore/Nels Cline pairings come to mind the most. Getting to see them do their thing so up close was my best experience in the "influence by osmosis" vein. I read an interview with Quine online somewhere, and he mentions trying very hard to absorb Miles Davis through repeated listens.

That's one solid list of influences :thumb:

He's in a band I really like called Innards, they're the best ever. He basically showed me how to use one's influences in genres that are entirely unrelated.
