Silvertone 1485

Post by Narwhal-Industries »

I just fixed a Silvertone 1485 for a customer. It's 60 Watts into six tens. It's one of the coolest amps I've heard in a while. For a Silvertone its very loud and punchy.

Jack White uses Silvertones and they all sound like sex

I don't know if I'd go that far. There are a few models that sound pretty good. This one was the first one I've played that I thought sounded really good.

Most of the Valco built ones are fantastic.
The Dano’s hit and miss some real gems and some dogs.

All of his Silvertones sound like sex. I think the 1485s sound good, I have played like 4 of them, and none of them were dogs.

I really love my Silvertone 1430--don't know if its a Valco, but its got that low-watt, Class A "clean but not clean" vibe--sounds awesome with a lap steel feeding it.

That is a pretty uncommon amp to have. If I haven't play it I know there aren't a lot of them out there. Does it have that 1940's Lap Steel amp sound?

^^I'm only going on recordings and Yoututbes, but I think that is its basic sonic signature, yes. Not a big sounding amp by any measure, not sparkly or glassy, but a sort of "challenged clean" that breaks up when pushed harder in a really fascinating way--just tons of texture and character that lap steel cuts through in a really nice way. Also was an electrical safety nightmare when I first got it....

Here is a cool two-tone one I fixed up a few years back. Pretty sure I sold it on eBay back round the year of our Lord 2005.

I had a 10xl that sounded superb with a lap steel. I love Silvertones! Currently rock the amp in a case with the Epic Marzipan guitar

Guitar case amps are great, we have one shoved in an old child's record player.
