could using a speaker cable damage anything in a pedal?
because when i think about it it hasnt worked since i plugged in and played with a speaker cable from the guitar to the pedal.

No. Speaker cables are usually not shielded, so they don't make good patch cords/instrument cables, but they won't hurt anything.

Not that anybody cares but i got it working. Had missed to ground the output jack to the gain pot.
