hip-hop anyone? Some of my favs...

Post by FuzzHugger »

Anyone into some good underground hip hop?

Mainstream rap is, and mostly has been, a total joke...but I'm really into some lesser known hip hop artists (and have done some production and sampling work for a few artists not mentioned below).

MF Doom, Aesop Rock, El-P, Rob Sonic... :poke: anyone? :ewok:

I have to say when I'm at my friends parties and he play's Rapper's Delight I rap to everyone in the room. I like The Sugar Hill Gang, and other "old school" rap.

Del the funky homosapien is pretty fun especially when combined with The Gorillaz. But really The Gorillaz is the closest thing I've ever bought as far as hip hop/rap goes.

Del's good.

MF Doom is on one of the songs from that last Gorillaz album, btw. Amazing lyricist.

peeping tom is the bomb, but then again i think almost everything that mike patton has done is awe inspiring.

sepalot has some bad beats. sample heavy.

if you like aesop rock you may like buck 65, his voice isn't nearly as dynamic, but i dig teh beatz.

cex is cool, has a bit of idm flavor, his early stuff is idm though, and his later stuff is :?: , so it's hard to say what you're going to get from album to album, can't really call him hip-hop, but he has gone there.

michael franti & spearhead, dan the automator, kool keith, dj shadow, EPMD, edan, dj spooky...almost anything on the ninja tune label, coldcut,
..... oh and i listen to the Freestylers all the time ...can't get enuff of that shite.

I'm a long time hip hop head. I have about 30 milk crates of vinyl, about 2/3 of which is 80s and 90s hip hop.
I used to DJ too (until I injured my elbow, and then I all but stopped.)

Definitely independant/underground (whatever you wanna call it) is my flavor. I'm usually checking for stuff on labels like Stones Throw, Def Jux, Hiero Emporium, Anticon, Quannum Projects, etc.
My main band has a definite hip hop influence, our record was put out on Quannum.

I haven't been hearing much lately that's breaking any new ground, which is why I've been in way more of a rock mood. But, I just heard some of the new MF DOOM yesterday...though there are no surprises, I'll surely pick that up...he's probably my favorite current MC.
