Sexy looks never hurt either, something the ILF builders know all too well...

I agree. I'd still would kinda like to own a Verellen, so that I could be making music with something that was built locally.

I'd like a verellen as well and I don't live anywhere close.

I just know they sound like pure sex live.

Interested in this 17 watt model, probably won't be able to afford one for some time though. My pedalboard through my Special 6 is all I need for now.

If I got a band started though....

The way I see it, I am pissed that Sunns cost so much for no goddamned reason, but I'd buy an Emperor amp for the fact that I have a solid bro in Chicago that would fix my amp and be glad to do so. My friend Justin bought two cabs from them, and one of the drivers in the 4X10 he bought just ate shit inexplicably. Thankfully, this occurred while he was on tour, around Chicago, and he just brought it into the shop. The guys there immediately fixed it, and he was on his way to use it night after night.

Peace of mind, I guess.

Very good point, assuming Emperor's prices aren't fucking nuts!

Based on their past, shit should be good to go. Fairly priced, quality offerings seems to reflect Emperor thus far.

But there's a perfectly coherent reason why Sunn gear costs so much.

And it's part of the reason why Emperor is starting to make model T clones.

Just sayin'. I'm all for the circuits getting into the hands of more people, but not for the alleged fashion sense of people trying to buy their way into a scene.

Pike's amp on Holy Mountain was a Laney AOR. Can we send the fuckheads chasing after that one already?

It's true that some of the Sunn stuff is overpriced but the same goes for Fender, Orange, Hiwatt, Vox, Matamp, Sound City, and Marshall of the same era.
Last year I purchased a 1968 Sunn Sorado on Ebay for $400 shipped, in a Anvil road case. It had originally auctioned off for $360 and the winner didn't pay, so the seller reposted it BIN for $400. This isn't a rare occurrence, I've seen similar Sunn and Ampeg (I have Ampeg B25B that I purchased for $300) amps sell in the same price range all the time. I have also seen similar amps listed for far more but I have yet to see them sell at the higher prices.

If I were to have taken my $400 out on the hunt for similar amps made in that era (or any era for that matter) from most of the other companies I listed, I would have been laughed at.

I do get that certain players/genres of music can definitely influence prices of gear. I also admit I was steered towards Sunn and Ampeg by the style of music I play. To get the sound I wanted I needed amps that took pedals well and stayed clean at loud volumes. Everywhere I looked kept leading me back to Sunn and Ampeg and I still have yet to find another amp in the $300-$400 range that does what I want any better. If you have any suggestions please let me know. The only current amps I found in that range were Bugeras. What would you consider a fair price for a 40 year old hand wired tube amp? I looked into the Laney you mentioned and they seem to sell in that same range so I guess the "fuckheads" are already onto them. I really am interested in a cheaper alternative if one exist.

To to sum it up:
Yes, Sunn amps can be overpriced but they still offer a better value than most similar amps of the same era.

As far a Emperor goes if they can keep the quality/service up and the price down I'm all for it.
:oldrant:
P.S. I can be a dick but I'm not trying to be one right now, so please don't take it like that.

So, I have a Coli 880. A solid state amp. And I bought it $350 Buy it Now in like 2009. I ran into the guy that sold it to me (small world, he lives in Ft. Worth, which w'eas convenient for when i bought the amp) recently, and the first thing he said was "Thos Sunns sell for a LOT more now, mannnnn". Apparently, he had seen an identical amp sell for $800, and was kinda pissed that he sold his for so low. I just smiled, and walked off.

The market has been artificially inflated, hence why I said the prices are high for no goddamned reason. It's not as bad as when tone lawyers raise the prices on something, but still. I will admit, I still see Sunns sell for reasonable-ish prices, but they don't stick around for long.

Our bassist got his concert bass and lead for like $150 each. :idk:

I didn't think it was a bad deal.

He got his 610 for like $200 I believe.

Anyway you slice it, though, the Sorado's not a head you can get away with FOR TEH DOOOOMZ!

At least, not with just one. Odds are, if you want to be gigging with high volume and no PA support, you're looking at a 2000S. Orange/Matamp you're going for the OR and GT's. 'Pegs point you toward the Skunkworks SVTs and the Blueline-era heads. Barring that, You're looking at a VR.

All of those, by today's market, sell for 1500-1800-ish. Definitely 2K on the older ones if they're in great condition.

None of which is really a bad thing, it just sucks to be that guy on my rocking chair talking about the good old days when you could easily pick up a nice vintage Model T/Skunkworks/etc. and not have to sell a limb or five.
:grumpy:

Also, for $300-400 in doom/psychedelic/Sabbath Warship dollars now I'd shoot for Sovteks and Peavey tube heads from the 80's. Especially for guitarists--the old Peavey Butcher is a JCM800 clone that routinely sells for $150-200 on the interwebs.

For Guitar, the Sorado and the Ampeg B25B (Blueline) together, bring 120w of the Doom, which may not qualify me for http://www.doperigs.com but for the small clubs it's plenty. I use them to run 2 412s and a 215 and the only complaints I've had were that I was too loud. At $700 dollars I think that's pretty fair for a pair of 40yr old amps.
Anyway, my point is all vintage amps are overpriced whether it's a $1500 Model T or a $3000 Marshall.
As far as Peavey goes I've never had good luck with them being reliable. :idk:

RedBear Mk120 is THEE AMP. Has a ridiculous amount of low end. Seriously, it's borderline retarded. Can be had for around 5 hundy.
