I used to be all "Drum machines suck and should never be used." Now, I can see where they work. I realized I just hated that classic gangsta rap sounding drum machine. I think it's the 808 but it might not be that. Either way, being able to improvise at least a little is necessary for me in a live setting, so...no drum machine.
Would it be possible/feasible to get a drum machine to play in 6/8? Because that seems like it'd be the dealbreaker for me.

Dude, you live in the middle of Landlocked Suffering, Middle of the US. Are you seriously saying that you don't live/love Big Black?

snipelfritz wrote:No, I'm saying that I eventually came around to drum machines in the proper context. I don't think they should be used as an alternative for a drummer unless you either really need to or if you want that specific sound. That was all long before I had ever heard of Big Black, who totally rule.

I mostly use Reason/record for all that electronic stuff, but the Roland mc-303 is totally useable, and pretty cheap these days. "old" drum machines are just as good as new expensive ones. Plus the roland manual is online

DO IT!!!
and I mean that in more than one way. And I mean that in more than one way.
Just to reiterate, jazz/rock drummers are where it's at. They tend to be better at thinking "outside the box" and aren't always all BOOM BOOM CRASH, but still can be.
