Finding A Good Drummer..

Post by Eric! »

..sucks! It's tricky business to find both a well-abled, creative, solid drummer AND a drummer dedicated to making music.

They're always the hardest pieces to come by, it seems.

..and I just fucking lost mine. Great, now how am I supposed to find someone that not only is cool with fuzzy bass tones, but embraces them and can play along and write along with it?

Drum machines don't forget their cymbals or the guitarist's amp or get lost on their way to the venue or have to cancel because their girlfriend wants to spend every waking moment with them..

Best place to look for a drummer is usually under the table or back in the bus with your girlfriend...
Mine got jailed and that was the end of that.

I don't speak rap, but recommend a decent one that's not a million $$ and you don't need to be an astronaut to fly the thing
(how about one with +5V trigger out, because I have an old sampler that uses that not midi, and it's be cool to be able to synch it up).

Second, I'm a simpleton, and I enjoyed my Alesis SR-16.

Hang outside your local highschool's jazz band practice and start blasting Sonic Youth or Broken Social Scene or the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack and see who comes up to you.

I used to be all "Drum machines suck and should never be used." Now, I can see where they work. I realized I just hated that classic gangsta rap sounding drum machine. I think it's the 808 but it might not be that. Either way, being able to improvise at least a little is necessary for me in a live setting, so...no drum machine.

Would it be possible/feasible to get a drum machine to play in 6/8? Because that seems like it'd be the dealbreaker for me.

Sort of, you can set it up for a six note measure but, it wont group the triplets so you have to play slower and exaggerate the triplets yourself to get the point across. But yeah, I play in weird times a fair bit (Shoegaze waltz 4 life).

I sympathize. Been drummerless since 2007. Still haven't found a replacement. We had to buckle and hire a guy that we can't afford. He's awesome, but drumming is one of his jobs, rather than something he wants to dedicate his life to.
