Submini Tube Boost? Also, HALP

Post by theavondon »

SO, one of my first pedal purchases ever was this:

a MAMMOTHsound MAMMOTHbooster. Bought it off the guy's myspace, (http://www.myspace.com/mammothsoundaudio). The guy used to also post on TB, buuuuuuuuuuuuuut I haven't heard much from him of late. It has a Russian 1zh17b pentode sub-mini tube inside, but the guy was otherwise sparse on the deetz. Here's some gut shots. (I did the best I could without destroying the pedal completely in the process)

Now, as you can see, the build quality was kinda...lacking. But, for some god awful reason, this thing sounds amazing. I've used it in every band I've been in since I got it. It just slams the input of anything with this big, thick tone that I've never been able to recreate with any other pedal. I've used it so much that the paint is incredibly chipped, the knob has fallen off long ago and the split shaft of the pot has been squeezed together, and the power jack doesn't stick in at all anymore, usually requiring the assistance of tape to stay put.

I was wondering, oh wise minds of the ILF DIY section,

1) Does anybody have any vague clue what this could be? At all, any guesses, I've got nothin'. And yeah, I realize I take incredibly shitty pictures, my bad.

2) Would anybody want to rehouse this or somehow rebuild this in a way that would allow me to use it both easily, and without fear of breaking it (seriously, nerve-wracking fear every time I switch it on)?

3) What are you wearing? (optional)

That thing is wacky. Looks like it actually uses a charge pump instead of just running the tube on 9V. Nice.

If I knew more about tube circuits, I'd be down... but, alas...

i would guess its just a tube boost thats being run at a high voltage. probably like 170v. i dont really think theres a need to worry about it breaking if its lasted you this long, and when/if it does break we can do a proper tracing of it to figure out what exactly is going on in there.

;) sure is. Looks like a MAX1044 charge pump with about ten electro caps, so it's probabaly putting out around 50v from a 9v input. I'd be happy to sort it's life out for you. But be warned - I seriously value my time. I don't stock that particular tube, but it'd be fun to do a total rebuild using the existing tube.
