Pitchshifters in Shoegaze???
In nearly every shoegazery setup I see, there's almost always a pitchshiter, and in nearly every interview I read, people say they use them. How exactly do you incoporate a pitchshifter into your sound? In what way do you use it? Before or after dirt? Any examples where you can hear one being used in this style?
I mean, I can understand people using POGs etc, but I don't think I can think of an instance where I've listened to a shoegaze tune and been able to pick out a pitchshiter being used.

Re: Pitchshifters in Shoegaze???
I used to have a POG2 and a Whammy 4. The Whammy was just unuseful with me. In the end, I always find myself going back to the good old Boss PS-3 (mode 7 all the time).
How would I incorporate it in a shoegazer-y setup? Having it washed with loads of reverb, so to have some sort of "shimmered reverb" with only a hint of dry signal.
However, I found that a good shimmer reverb (e.g., the one in the strymon blueSky Reverberator) is more my cup of tea. Then I stick another reverb after it and I'm set. Really looking forward to trying the shimmer/swell delays in the Timeline.
On the contrary, I've never been into pitch-shifting/octave up&down by itself.

Very subtly... If we're talkin ol school Gazin it was pretty much use whatever pedals were around... If used to pitch in semi tones up or down just a little it can fatten up the Swervin riffs or ad that pretty shimmer a la a chorus for Slowdivin... Medicine which is considered gaze I guess used hella shiftin but it's easy to hear when Brad does it... Used lightly with reverb or delay can add spookiness like Lush... Old Ride and Chapterhouse has alot of shiftin in various places...

Makes me want my PS-3 back. I let my friend borrow it. The delay is pretty terrible but the pitch shifter is pretty cool.

Yeah, I had a whammy 2 and ended up only using the chorus. Do has wants for a PS-2 or 3 though.
But back to chutney's real question, I think the position depends on how well it can track your signal. I prefer most things after dirt if they can handle it, hand you'd pretty much use it to make simple riffs exponentially awesome, especially if you wash it out with more verb and delay.

Re: Pitchshifters in Shoegaze???
I have been interested and used a whammy for spacey pitch effects.. Now I got the ring thing and I enjoy it a lot as a pitch shifter. It tracks very well, is extremely fast and polyphonic and works great after dirt.. to get airborne, add some light chorus, a delay and some over the top reverb. Can't recommend this pedal enough.. and this is just the pitch shifter part, tuned ring modulation to the notes you play is true blue.

Harmony mode FTW. really useful for thickening up stuff, especially drone lines and split signal stuff. I grabbed a dirt cheap behringer ps2 knock off and its rarely off harmony mode

Swirling guitars, man. It's all about swirling guitars.
I'm sure there's some pitch shifted fuckery going on on the first My Bloody Valentine record. Will listen to it later to make sure.
