I only use short delay, for slapback for a more bouncy reverb tone
favorite delay for this utilitarian purpose: DM-2
favorite delay based on sound alone: DMM (my '77 or whatever year one)

actually i've been thinking about it a lot lately... but it's a lot of money and i'm afraid it would compete with my Faux Tape Echo

when i buy a second delay i want it to complement the first one (or to replace it on purpose)... so... not sure if i really want to go for it

I know what you mean. When I got serious about buying a delay the clips for the skreddy sounded better than everything else. It does lack the versatility of the el cap or the ehx delays, but it makes up for it in the sound.

i absolutely love Kayzer's demos of it :) btw i bought my FTE from him by a complete chance after half a year of watching his FTE demo

I've been looking into high-end delays for a while now, it's a wild world and the amount of cash i'd spend needs proper consideration...

Delay is one of my favorite type of effects. I've tried my fair share, but I'm a very particular when it comes to what I like. I will admit, I can be a cork-sniffer when it comes to it. To me it's like bourbon or coffee. Both of which I greatly enjoy, but I don't drink them to get wasted or a caffeine buzz, or because of any health benefits. I drink them because I enjoy the flavor. Any potential secondary effects are just bonuses. That's the main reason why I don't really pay much attention to the Starbucks delays. That's not to say that there isn't any diamonds in the rough of bottom shelf, mass produced delays. I would just rather save my time, and disappointment, and save up for something I know I have a better chance of enjoying.

I'm not a cork-sniffer when it comes to all effects though. I also really love overdrives, but more in the same way that I love pizza. It's one of my favorite types of food, and as long as it's not completely awful I will most likely enjoy it. That's not to say that I don't have my preferences. I'm just not as choosey. The Boss TR-2 is still one of my favorite trems.

But back to the original topic. According to my memory these are the delays that I've owned:
Boss DD-5
Boss DD-20
Boss DM-2
Boss PS-3
Boss RV-2
EHX DMM
EHX MB
Empress Superdelay
Line6 DL4
Line6 M9
Malekko E300d
MXR Carbon Copy
Strymon Brigadier
Strymon El Capistan

So, I've owned <$75 delays, and >$300 delays, and for me personally I can notice the higher quality of the top shelf delays. That's not to say that everyone needs to spend $450 on a Superdelay or Timeline, but I will be saving the money for one. :p

no, when you're using it as a looper it functions like any other record-and-punch-in/out looper, though it seems a bit warmer-sounding than some i've heard, probably because the whole unit is voiced to emulate tape effects. that's why i've been working up the dual-delay setup for solo stuff, so i can loop with the Head Rush to build up clean layered compositions and do tape-echo sound-on-sound with the Flashback to build up walls of Fripp.

if there's a delay available that will loop i.e. record/overdub/playback and allows you to degrade the loop as if it were a analog tape loop, please tell me what it is so i can add it to my GAS list.

There is alot of talking and it's kinda convoluted the way he explains it but the 2880 can be used as such... He's using one of the tracks to play a loop and degrade it over time, but you can do it liveish too... If you leave one of the tracks armed and in constant record mode it acts like a tape looper that you can vary with the tempo slider...

And I love the El Cap and Flashback for making my noise sound better... The DMB was cool but I couldn't get over the noise, I used to have a Rock and Roll Workshop Dual Delay that was awesome but I sold it to my friend to get the El Cap... Dual Delay is real cool if you can find one, stereo with send and returns for each delay and exp pedal input for each... Check out William Basinski's Disintegration Loops for some cool tape delay fun...

myy favorite outta the ones i've owned would be the EQD Disaster Transport jr. small, brilliant, effective.
if i had some cash for another delay i'd get another SolidGoldFX Electroman. the warp footswitch was a pretty rad feature.
still kinda kicking myself in the ass for letting that one go.

I've never had the opportunity to try one of these, but the demos I've heard sound amazing!
the fx loop feature is nice too...kinda reminds me of the Skreddy, but with a little more control.

El Cap!

It basically reapplies the settings (ie tape age, wow & flutter, tape crinkle, etc) to each repeat. Kindof like if you photocopy something and then photocopy the photocopy and keep doing that after a while the image won't look the same and you'll have stuff there that wasn't there before and stuff missing.

I can record you some clips of a fresh loop vs old loop with mine if you'd like. Though I'm not sure how GAS inducing they will be. I have a pretty lame recording setup (just an iPhone).

I'm still a DMM dude.

El Capistan is brilliant, but as a stompbox it failed for me.
I hated how difficult it was to access the "Secondary controls".
I want every function to have a dedicated knob!
HOW THE FUCK CAN I WORK SHIT LIKE THIS WHEN I'M ON MUSHROOMS, STRYMON! WTF?!
Maybe partying will help.

oh, and I'm about to check out Disaster Transport and the Analogman Dual Delay is killer.
I have an AMAZE0 controller coming for the AM, if it's good it might be the one for me, fatty.
