Random Delay

Post by oldangelmidnight »

Is there a delay that has a setting that would make the delay repeats happen at random intervals? Like someone adjusting the time knob between each repeat. The closest I can get is the multi-head setting with a weird ratio on the Headrush.

I think it would require some kind of digital controller to randomly set the delay time. You can use some kind of LFO, but you'll get pitch bends as the delay time itself is modulated.

Shoot - I'd be interested in THAT (randomized delay with pitch-bend artifacts). Especially if the range of randomization could be controlled.

Something like this on the Deluxe Memory Boy? Look from 4:30

If you want to get all crazy about it (and expensive) - you can modulate the delay time on the Moogerfooger delay with control voltage, so if you patch some sample & hold voltage into the time input in the back it will do what you describe. SO just run out and get you a MF-104z and a CP-251 and BOOM - all set. See? Simple.

Or just wait for this:

That's close but I want random changes, rather than increasing intervals.

The Boss DSD-2 can also do triggered delays so if there's an inexpensive randomizing triggerer, that would work.

Besides the Moog 104z and CP251 combo... I'm not sure you're going to get true random without building something yourself. easiest would be arduino based with the extension ad/da converter board. (still not cheap and you gotta program it)

thought about the digitech time bender?

Click link to jump right to the part I'm talking about. you can strum the delay pattern you want. (not random but kind of even cooler than that since you can program your delay intervals yourself)

I'm probably wrong, but doesn't the Haunting Mids delay do something like this? Seems like I read that the delay time is affected by how strong of an input you give it.

I've been thinking about getting into Arduino for effects; it seems like there's a lot of potential. I'm not really sure where to start with that, though.

I've got a Timebender and it's pretty good but the strum pattern can only be 7 beats.

you could use a s&h in place of the LFO, though you'll most likely still get some bending/portamento between times depending on what type of control you use. i've been thinking about this for a looooong time... :p
