I'm actually not kidding, after having played a ton at work I can't help but feel that they're genuinely amazing guitars
overpriced, sure, but I'm starting to see it differently

where as before if a guitar was over $700-$1000 I'd think it was an overpriced piece of crap for the sole purpose of name bearing
but after a bit even the staunchest of the diy-ers and expensive gear haters has to realize that that is the way the market is set up
is a ferrari a better car than a corolla of the same year? yes
is part of the price simply the name? yes
but is it still a much better designed and built machine? yes

the trad pros and the melody makers w/ coil tapped buckers (an amazing modding guitar if you're looking for one) are some of my favorite guitars right now
the tones and feel combined with the build quality is really something I'd like to own for myself

honestly I think a big part of the culture of "this shits overpriced and not as nice as my [insert whatever] of [fraction of price]" comes from self-assurance and esteem issues, which I'm finally getting over, myself. Maybe I'm projecting my own experiences and realizations on an entire group of people, thats totally possible and likely, even.
But it's not just the guitar, it's all manner of other things.
I'm starting to not despise myself and how I am, a very genuine effort to realize what I don't like and go about fixing it. And from that comes a weird realization; it's ok for me to have nice things, and to enjoy them. It's ok for me to be honest about the caliber of musician (at least guitarist) I am.
It's not only ok, it's great.
As this mindset grows and I embrace it and keep on doing things as I would've liked to and in my mind always convinced I was doing I find the things I used to see as pointless and compensation are actually quite nice and I don't give a fuck what people, who are like I've been for years now, think.
I have my Ibanez DE7 but would much rather DL4 or something else nice. And why not?
....
holy balls, rant lol

Trad Pros are great, my favorite current production LP, besides a Custom. The coil tap is pretty cool, offers a lot more variety. Also favor the satin back and sides.

My buddy has the ltd. Gold Top/Dark Back, love that guitar. There is the matter of cost though, GC discount should aleviate some of that?

I lol'd.

But, I dig what you're saying, HT. I sold off two perfectly well functioning and great playing basses, and bought two American-made basses that were older than me. Could I have gotten by with an Epiphone T-bird and an Ibanez ATK? Yeah, sure. Did playing those basses make me nearly as happy as playing my G&L and Grabber do? GOD no.

If you want the Gibson, buy the Gibson.

Bingo. That thing looks sweet, and probably sounds even better. Go for it. Especially if you snag it at a sale or discount.

Get it.

Not buying something just because it's expensive or has a big name is EXACTLY the same as just buying something because it's expensive and has a big name. It's just a kneejerk reaction that says you're more concerned with what other people think of you than your instrument.

You should head over to TGP and hang with the other OLD SRV wannabes who feel the same way. :p

In the past, maple-capped LP's just haven't worked for me. Keeps things cheap on that front. Gretsches, though . . .

"not sure, I can def find out if you'd like, does it feel good in your hand?"
"well how can I know if it feels good if I don't even know the shape of the neck"
"uh...[totes not knowing how to reply to this], is it comfortable? how does your hand feel on the back of the neck?"
"just go find out the shape so I can know if it suits my hand"
