Superfuzz (different models)

Anywhere out there that has a breakdown of what each superfuzz sounds like? FY-2, 3, 7 or whatever. I played the BYOC and really liked it. Now I'm curious what's out there and what each sounds like. :snax:

FY-2 isn't a Super-Fuzz. That's the gnarly Shin-ei Companion fuzz with only a pair of trannies (C536 F7Gs?)
Super-Fuzz is FY-6, with 6 trannies -- I've seen loads of different transistors in there. Different versions -- really only the v1 and v2, and the Uni-Fuzz.
Although you'll see them with a million different brand names and they also pop up in the Shin-ei built Fuzz Wahs as the FY-8 = superfuzz 6 trannies + 2 trannies for the wah (but so does the FY2).

Here's the Uni-Fuzz (hard-wired AC plug), v2 Univox Super-Fuzz and v1 Shin-ei branded FY-6 Super-Fuzz.

Ibanez Standard Fuzz is a variant though.
I think the Ace Tone FM-2 might be related too.

Aside from Wattson, SolidGoldFX does a clone, so does Creepy Fingers, didn't Black Cat have one too? I have Paisley Super-Fuzz w/ 2n3904s in it, which will rip your face off.

Of course the VoodooLab Super Fuzz is actually a Jordan Bosstone.

Try a Standard Fuzz if you can too -- very similar, I thnk it's only a diode or two different.

Superfuzz is one of my favorite fuzz tones ever; original versions go for RIDICULOUS $$$.
Don't seem to be many options for clones; the Wattsons are sick, as I'm sure the Creepy Fingers are. Will have to check out the SolidGoldFx.
GGG has a Companion Fuzz kit (the FY-2 mentioned above; as on Radiohead's "Myxamatosis") but the only Superfuzz PCB I've ever found is from Pigeon Fx in the UK. I ordered one recently, we'll wait and see...

I have the Black Cat Superfuzz in the older enclosure, and it sounds really great. By itself, when stacked, volume knob up, down. It's really grown on me. I am thinking of replacing it with a Jupiter Effects Superfuzz nonetheless. I know Florian is a great builder, and I would probably get some money from selling one and replacing it with the other and not have to compromise in quality.

Wow. That's frakked up, and they're up-front with it right on their web page. They used to sell probably the same exact thing as the "Boss Tone." I'm guessing someone had a good copyright and/or trademark claim, compared to everyone and his brother selling a Super Fuzz.

Florian/Jupiter is a super nice guy to deal with, he does some great work...hopefully he's back on track to releasing his own stuff soon.

The malekko is a good choice for super fuzz on the cheaps.

Voodoo is basically squatting the name, which is lame. They threatened legal action against wattson for using the name "super fuzz" on a fuzz that was in fact, a super fuzz.

Those two circuits are really similar to the Superfuzz circuit. Just a few different parts/component values but same general circuit. The Ibanez/Bruno fuzz has a jfet at the input and is supposed to sound a little grittier. I built an Acetone Fuzzmaster and it's fucking great. I left out the midscoop filter and have a switch that goes between germanium diodes and then some other type of silicon diodes that sound great. Really fat really fuzzy...

And the fucked up thing is they turned right around and did the cease and desist thing to Wattson, which is why the Wattson Super-Fuzz is now just called the Wattson Fuzz. :picard:

Behringer do a Super Fuzz. Alas it's a Boss FZ-2 clone. I guess Behringer are too big to be intimidated by Voodoo Labs. Or perhaps this is a geographic thing. Nothing amazing about the components in the FY-6, but the high parts count always put me off building these. They do sound great though. Really like the FY-8 fuzz wah (or hurricane fuzz if you like) variant of this pedal too.

As mentioned before, FY-2 is completely different, gnarly obnoxious fuzz yadda yadda.
