TELL ME WHAT AMPS TO BUY

Post by McSpunckle »

K, so I hate my amp. It's an acoustic 150 into an Avatar 4x10. Hate's a strong word, but it's just not what I want.

So here's the deal..

I want a low wattage tube head. Like 15 watts, but I'm not that picky. So long as it can do cleans pretty well, I'm happy. I play clean, like, most of the time.

And if it has a nice matching 1x12 cab, that's even better. If it comes in a combo... OK too, but I'd prefer head/cab.

Schematics and kits are fine too. I'm totally down to build one. Then I'd just need cab recommendations.

Now, bass! I have basically similar requirements. Smallish head, small cab, not stupidly expensive. probably has to be solid state... since I love the cleans.

I'm in the dark on amps. I've looked at Blackheart... they're probably top of my list now, because I don't have much money.

For the bass amp, I really don't know. I'm thinking of going all talkbass-y with a 1x12 cab and a smallish head, or a 15 if it has good high end. Hopefully if it has a horn, I can tell it to shut the fuck up. :idk:

HOW DO YOU HATE THE 150!?!?!?

I don't know about heads, but I highly recommend Avatar's SB112. It totally rules, and is rather cheap.

Low watts and great cleans don't go together very well, in my experience.
Maybe partying will help.

For bass, I'm using the little Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0 right now. It's only 3 pounds, clean as a whip, and I got mine for about 300 bucks used. Awesome amp.

edit:: Just a warning though, it's not low wattage, it's 300 watts (supposedly). But I can absolutely play it at bedroom volumes when the master is in the 1-2 range.

For bass, probably any of the Peavey Mark Series. I have the Mark VIII, and it has a pretty sweet chorus built into it. Although the VIII would be overkill for your purposes, I'd imagine. Maybe a Peavey Mark IV?

And they're dirt cheap.

Genz Benz makes some small bass amps. Most small tube guitar heads break up pretty easily. I'd go with a fender blues jr. or deville.

Low wattage clean amp... maybe Bogner Duende... or some 65 amp.

I love my Blackheart Handsome Devil combo, but they make head +cab too. It does have good cleans, as long as you're looking for tubey overdriven cleans, not crystal clear high wattage Fender cleans. It has much better cleans than the Tiny Terror, IMO. And it takes pedals as well or better, which it needs because it doesn't have heavy overdrive-gain like a TT. I like the stock speaker enough that I left the one in my combo. I mostly play with a fuzz or fuzz + od in front of it, and an addt'l closed back 1x12 with a Em Tonker. For a newer budget combo or head/cab, it's hard to beat.

I use mine for bass as well, but always with some distortion or gain, so I can't really comment on clean bass tone. Would probably be OK or better for low volume clean recording-playing.

For guitar, how about the Mesa Trans-Atlantic? Or maybe the traynor dark horse...

That's my knee-jerk suggestion. I resisted.

What's not happening with the 150? Solid-state vs. tube?

He asked for small and wimpy not the hammer of thor.

Are Orange Tiny Terrors out of your budget? I play with two guys that use them with acoustic and get great tones. Bass model looks cool too... or you could just get a Dumble...
