Pedal Suggestions

Post by spennybrun »

Ive just started getting into playing punk/shoegaze music and I wanted to know what pedals I should consider.
Im a student so I dont have a crazy disposible income but i would love to hear some suggestions for pedals that would give me that kind of sound.
I play a fender Tele and have a Fender Hotrod Deville in case that helps.
As a reference, bands I would say would influence my music style would be Titus Andronicus, Deerhunter, Black Lips, No Age, Joy Division, Beach Boys, Modest Mouse, Cloud Nothings, The Cramps, Bowie, Iggy Pop, Kurt Vile, Misfits, The Unicorns.

You've got good-ass taste, Spenny. Welcome to ILF! My advice to you is to just hang out in the Buy / Sell / Trade forum and see what catches your eye. Most of the stuff that comes through here has demos online somewhere or another. There are a shit-ton of stripes in the fuzzy rainbow. Taste it.

I'd check out the Fix'd fuzz. You have so many options from clean boost/ dirty boost, really thin fuzz to explosive and fat fuzz. Sounded great with chords and lots of reverb.

Depending a lot of what You intend to do with the pedalboard, :whateva: You want probably want some mad modulation, echo and - since You are here - an array of fuzz pedals to match Your taste.

You'll have to experiment between different dirts and pedal combinations to find Yours, whether it's classic design or something outrageously modern You are after. Ge/si? Opamp? Low to medium gain/ melt Your face and spit on the grave amount of über fuzztortion. Does it come with gcrazy mofo oscillation or is it gated, is it tacky vecroy decay or an octave fuzz perhaps that is more Your sound, or are You after something grany 8-bit and/or filtered.

This is a good place to find information on absolutely awesome fuzz love. :ilf:

I'll echo my fuzzy friend Kosta here. Post a bit and contribute, Buy/Sell/Trade thread is an open market place of all sorts of fuzzy and swinging pedal goodness. Like any forum B/S/T thread, members play by trust and caution, so hang around, contribute a bit.

:hello: And welcome, drop a line in the introduction thread too, perhaps, where people will know to look up.

You DO have awesome taste in music. I went to a show and one of the openers was Deerhunter. I had never heard of them before and they totally blew my mind. They were awesome!

I love almost every band you listed.

I think a Big Muff of some type (not necessarily EHX) is a good place to start.

Maybe look for a Basic Audio Gnarly fuzz. Stooges like tone.

:whateva: :thumb: ... since You're a student and have a budget - I know how it can be - do some research, spare a bit money and buy something absolutely awesome, and call it an investment.

Really, the best advice, since you're just kinda looking to start, is to hang out for a while, see what comes up, and save up for whatever catches your fancy. Though, if you really like having money, don't go to any of the individual builder's forums, where you'll find out tons of information about a countless amount of truly amazing pedals. Whenever anyone asks me about a pedal suggestion, I usually just recommend one of the builders here on the forum. So, look around! Trust me, you'll find something.

I haven't spent enough playing time with mine, but a Devi Ever Shoegazer should do all those sounds pretty well.

Nice taste! I second what theavadon said though, lurk for a little while untill you find something you fancy. Unless you want something specific.

I think the best places to start are 1 good overdrive, fuzz, reverb, and delay.

Hang out in the B/S/T and wait for some good deal to pop up.
