Hoof for solid rock tones?

Post by DarkAxel »

Hey guys

long story short - there's a killer deal for Hoof Reaper in B/S/T, i PM'd, we'll see if we agree on something

anyway i'd like to try Hoof Reaper one day anyway (for haters - this is the killer deal worth spending a part if my freshly acquired money ;) ) and i was wondering - is Hoof side good for higher gain rock tones?

one of my favourite bands of all time, Amplifier has a great sound - a big part of that sound is a green sovtek muff. Is Hoof close to those "distortionish" tones with massive low end but great clarity?

(i hope it could replace my Wampler Pinnacle for higher gain overdrive tones)

of course it's gonna be dirty that's a good thing :)

First of all, anyone who hates on the Hoof Reaper is a doooooouche.

Second, it should be perfect for what you're looking for. I definitely thought of the Hoof more as a distortion than a fuzz when I had it. That's ultimately why I got rid of mine, I was looking for something to jank up my sound a little more. You can indeed get massive low end and clarity. Good luck picking that one up, its a great deal :thumb:

Amplifier are an awesome band, I'm going to see them twice this summer! :joy: The Hoof should work great for that stuff too, definitely do it. :thumb:

I had a Hoof and it was pretty a pretty low gain pedal. It sounded like a gnarly, dark overdrive pedal to me.

My big problem with it was that it got lost in the mix SO BAD. Like way beyod what any fuzz has ever done for me. The "shift" knob definately didn't help.

Sorry for the negativity.. I know that's not what you want to hear. But the Hoof was a huge let down for me once I got it out of my room. I'm sure lots of people make it work but I couldn't.

I think I may have liked it better through my ac30 but it didn't work at the time. I tried it through a Roland (which all my other pedals sound great through) an old Crate Palomino, a Peavy bass amp that I found in a parking lot, and my little old no name practice amp.

It sounded really great at home but even with just me and a drummer you couldn't hear it at all. I don't know how Dan Auerbach does it :idk: I think he just plays loud as fuck.

Hopefully you have a bright ass amp. I think that's what it needs.

Hoof Reaper would get ya there I bet. The Reaper side can add some bite to the wooly-ness of the Hoof side in my experience, though I have not played it in a band setting.

i'm unfamiliar with the Hoof, but from my experience the Reaper will DEFINITELY add edge and bite to anything you combine it with, so if the Hoof is too dark or insufficiently barky the HR should be a good alternative.

I don't know - Fix'd fuzz is pretty bright and edgy so i wouldn't mind something different :) that's why i hesitate to pull the trigger on the Tone Reaper that's in B/S/T (it's in UK)

hmm... i COULD buy a Madebymike Green muff with custom graphics, huh?

Exactly!!! :) i would let him put a sexy pin-up girl on it and rock the shit out of it :)

too bad his building period is 4-6 weeks... i'll be in Scotland by then. But i'll probably order it via my friend so he would recieve it

edit: mailed him :)

Oh yeah, so far it looks like i'm gonna order a Madebymike Green Muff with custom finish (pin-up girl), mids knob and a toggle to deactivate the knob... 86Ł shipped

due to his 4-6 building time, i shall recieve the pedal approximately when i come back from my summer job (that means august)

i'll write my impressions later then - either here or in the Madebymike thread
