Re: Drum machines
its like any other DAW really, ive found its simpler in some cases to record and mix. read the manuals and wikis for it, google anything u have questions about, and just kinda glance over the forums for reaper. i still have alot of things to learn and figure out myself but the more you play around with it the easier it will get. tutorials will help alot

I'm a bit lost with DAWs and last time I did any recording was back in the early 90s when it was tape based. I will do as you say and spend some time fishing around.
cheers

funkbox works also on my iphone. if you are into electro/disco beats this is the shit.
I wanted to get that one since it was mentioned here but I had like $1.38 in my bank account haha. Electro/disco beats are exactly what I want from this so yeah I'll have to get it.
Thanks!

Re: Drum machines
you can always run it into a cassette machine and push the record level up to max, thus making the cassette recorder into a crude preamp. delays that simulate tape degradation may also be your friend, especially if you use them to process loops.

That's exactly what I plan on doing! I'm a looping fool with my El Capistan. I can't get enough of that sound when the loop has been running for a while.
I can't wait to record a drum loop on my El Cap and then record guitar over it. It's gonna be saweeet.

Re: Drum machines
that's my favorite thing about looping and always has been since i first saw an Echoplex, the way that the sound changes as the signal degrades over time. that, along with guitar feedback, was my first exposure to the idea of an effects device as an interactive thing that could converse with you rather than something you switched on/off like a blender, and that single idea changed everything about electric music for me.

dubkitty-

That's probably my favorite sound ever. It totally changed my sound/style as well.
I'll send you some clips once I get this whole drum machine thing sorted out if you'd like.

I just have an iPhone and I record clips with the voice memos app that it comes with. I can't upload them I can only email clips up to 2 minutes long. But I'll send it to anyone who wants it.
I have some decent loops with no drum machine. The timing isn't perfect and the quality isn't great. I mainly record a lot of stuff so I don't forget it. I'd rather try to make a nicer one to send out haha
