Fredric Effects and Made by Mike Effects: Your thoughts?

Post by dorfmeister »

There are a couple of British guys over at the ShortScale message board who build effects at pretty decent prices even shipped from the UK....anybody used their wares and compared them to the usual suspects in the I Love Fuzziverse?

So what is the character of the Op-Amp Muffs compared to say a Green Muff?

Made by Mike Op-Amp Muff.

So I am looking at the Green Muff Made by Mike builds.....65 pounds + 6 pounds for shipping at todays exchange rate = $116. That is a pretty damned good price if it sounds good and is built well.

I've never actually played any, but all reports on Mike's pedals are very good, he posts lots of gutshots and they look fine, and he was really helpful (and cheap!!) when I asked him about a custom build I ended up not going for. Been thinking about asking him for something else recently, he seems to be a cool dude, for what that's worth.

I stumbled on the Fredric stuff a while back, some of it looks pretty interesting.

I've a few things on list to be ordered from Mike, at some point, I've heard nothing but good of his builds.

i've had pedals from both of them. The build quality is brilliant, the price fantastic and they are both great to deal with. Mike will do custom builds and his combo pedals are great fun. Mike will also do custom graphics as well and is really helpful if there are any issues. I've had a DLS clone and Green Muff clone which were amazing but currently have a Tonebender Mk III Ge and a Saltbooster which are among my favourite pedals, I have more on order and I'm working out when I can afford one of his Ultralord clones. I have Fredic Effects Tremolo and covert a harmonic percolator and Unpleasant Companion (Shin-Ei FY-2 Companion Fuzz Clone).

As you can tell I would recommend both of them and you wouldn't be disappointed with what you end up with

I'm very happy with my Frederic Effects Harmonic Percolator. It seems really solid. I've had it for a while. Sounds great and it seems like he did his homework on the circuit. Plus, it's fairly inexpensive, even shipped from England.

I ordered an IC muff from Mike just a few days ago. So I'll have an opinion in a few weeks. But so far, he's been great to deal with.

Hi hi.

I ordered a '78 Op Amp Muff from Mike a few weeks ago... and then won the real deal on eBay. Ha. Welp. I bid on the damn thing because I didn't think I would win, and I ended up being the only one to bid on it. It's a V5 Op-Amp with the Tone Bypass... it's super-dope, but I'm going to keep my order with Mike to contrast and compare (and I'd feel like a dick if I were to back out.). The MIM will be a lot smaller and pedalboard friendly... but can it top an original?

I'll let you know.

I have a Made by Mike Machine and Fender Blender clone, they're both brilliant and ridiculously cheaper than the other option. Mike's a good guy. You should all buy shit off him.

Ive got a Made By Mike Fuzz War and a Fredric Harmonic percolator. I spent alot of time hating the Fuzz war, I could never get it to sound good, but I started messing with the internal trim pot and it came alive and started sounding good. Its a sort of messy build and fairly average paintjob/finish as well as being a bit noisy (but the original Fuzz War is also), apparently it was a fairly early build, so maybe he has improved the workmanship, however, it still works like it should! The Fredric pedal is excellent workmanship, great finish and sounds pretty good, not exactly like a Harmonic percolator, but good in its own right. The switch to pull the clipping diodes out of the circuit is very useful, you can get some great OD/distortion type sounds with it. For budget clones I can recommend them both, they still work (which is a plus) and they're alot cheaper than the originals. I can also seriously recommend Ian at Ghost Effects, he builds alot of different clones and his workmanship is second to none, and they all sound amazing - he is a very underrated builder. His prices are a little higher than the other 2 but IMHO the quality is worth the extra $$.
buncha stuff...

That was you! Great stuff. I just got mine from Kosta yesterday (he had two!) and I love both looks and intestines!

Ian is around here too and Timhulio is the bloke from Fredrics, that is right.
