Medium USPS flat rates are about $10, depending where the box is going/weight it might be the cheapest.

True but if I can get it in a box slightly larger than the small flat rate boxes it will be about half of that.

You could just weigh the medium flat rate. Use light packaging. I always weigh the flat rates and use whatever's cheaper. Also, regional rate boxes are great.

If you're sending the weird one, it's probably actually closer to the current VTFs than the first ones in some ways, especially with the diode switches centered. I didn't abandon all of the tweaks.
