I like to have them a little above unity, so that the difference is slight when I turn one on but by stacking I can move more air.
It's not easy to dial in the right tone though. I hate it when I play alone and have the bass rumble around in my sack, and I feel like the Doom overlord but when I turn the same stuff on in a noisy band setting - WHOOSH - I am gone.

Well yeah I should revise my earlier post and say that my dirt is usually set for a little boost. Not really unity gain.
I play clean a lot though so I need my clean stuff to be loud and if I have a cranked fuzz on top of that it's just too loud.
