I'd want some kind of triple overdrive/fuzz/distortion pedal. I don't know what exactly.

Out of stuff I've owned and tried, SS/SS TAFM. It's my 'go to' fuzz sound and it's pretty versatile. A gnomeratron VTF might change my mind though, they look pretty nice.

If it's one box I'd say the hoof reaper. 3 pedals in one!

I think I would go with my JHS modded big box Rat RI. Pretty versatile piece of pedal with lots of tones that I like.

my ancient MXR Distortion+, now and forever. it does nicey overdrive, it does late-70s Garcia, it does Rust Never Sleeps-era Neil Young, it does Wall Of Husker Du...basically anything that sounds like an amp with 6Lx tubes being harmed. and it does all that before you get past 12:00 on the Distortion knob. it doesn't do the enormous fat "English" Marshall-y Tone Bender/Muff/Kevin Shields thing so well, which is a bummer, but since my Laney VC30 has the low-frequency Greenbacks i can cop some of the British sound by manipulating the amp. i've found that even with all the fuzz/distortion on my board--i just took two fuzzies off but still have three fuzzes and a boost in addition to the D+--i still use the D+ 60% of the time i have a fuzz switched on. it has a wonderful just enough/not too much quality about it where you can wind it up to screaming ferocity without losing definition. if i was going to criticize it for anything i'd complain that it gets thin when the distortion is cranked way up, but isn't that true of 90% of the dirtz on the market? note: mine is a block-logo D+ circa late 70s which i bought used c.1983, and is the only one i've ever played; i may have just gotten a really good one, and the others may all suck stones. i have no idea at all whether the modern ones are any cop whatsoever.
