I want a stacked humbucker in my Jaguar.

Post by Noise... »

Blasphemy, I know. But the bridge pickup in my Jag is too weak and brittle. It *can* sound ok, but it's just so thin...

I'm toying with the idea of replacing it with a stacked humbucker. Not something for teh br00tz, but something that will give me a nice and thick bridge sound, and fit well with the Jag neck pickup (which I love).

What would you guys recommend for that? I'm not too familiar with stacked humbuckers, so I don't really know where to start. :idk:

I've got a Seymour Duncan JB Jr in the neck of my jaguar and it sounds pretty kickass. How about just getting a hotter single coil though? I have a SD hot jag pickup in the bridge of mine and it can get pretty fat.

I thinks this is a good idea for a quick and easy switch. A coil tap HB sounds bad ass in a Jag also...

I have a hot rail in the bridge of my '65 mustang and it sounds great. I never had the original pickups for this guitar so that's the way I went when I found it and put it together 20 years ago (damn!). I was thinking of putting it back close to original condition but it still sounds good so I'll let it ride for now.

A hotter single coil could work, but will it get me some nice, thick tones without as much treble?

Seems pretty unanimous to go with a Duncan regardless though.

The duncans in my jag are the only 'aftermarket' pups I've ever tried and I bought it with them so I don't know anything about any other brands! They do sound good though. When I got the guitar it had the humbucker in the bridge, and I found it too harsh and trebly in a bad way, and I like lots of treble. There might have been a problem with the wiring though, whoever did it before I got the guitar did a terrible job of that. I think a humbucker in the bridge would work better for thick rock tones, the single coil in mine sounds great and not thin, but there's still loads of treble.

Honestly I don't know how dark/thick you can ever get a jaguar, seems like all the jangle just cuts through. :idk:

Ok - so if I go for the Jaguar Hot or a Quarter Pounder in the bridge, will the balance be WAY off with the neck pickup?

Should I just go for a matching set?

hmmm....
Whatever you do, keep me updated.
I got a Jag a little while ago and wouldn't be totally opposed to changing the pickups.

It might still stay alright because of the difference in string vibration, but it might throw it totally off. Hard to know until you try it, getting a set just for safety might be a good call. :idk:

What's different about mustang pickups?

I believe they're a little weaker and a little twangier.

Cool, I've always wanted to play a mustang because they look cool but I've never had the chance. I'm feeling pretty tempted to try out loads of different pickups in my jag now, if only I could afford it...
