Stock or your own thing? warning RIC content!

Post by Mudfuzz »

Ok so I got this stripped 1977 RIC 4001. It really is a cool beast but as one can see I need to get parts for it...

And I'm on the fence weather to restore it to a "normal" 4001 or "mudfuzz it" :p

I'm really only talking about the plastic parts: I like the longer 60's pickguard better then the later shorter ones and the bass doesn't have a logo plate... and I'm not sure I want to pay $150 - $200 for a used one and RIC has not gotten back to me... plus even when/if they do it will be $50... Do "I" need it to say Rickenbacker... I'm really giving thought to have one made with it saying FLCL in japanese.... :p Thoughts....

Oh and more useless info and thoughts in blog... http://what-ever-blank-ever.blogspot.co ... t-one.html

I really need to see a pick of this.
Than you should sell it to me so I can restore it to "normal" 4001 :thumb:

Boy, that depends.

If it's something that you want to bring back to playing ability, and then down the road sell it for a profit, I'd make sure it's as close to "stock" as possible. If it's something that you want to play and if you sell it someday, whatever, I'd customize it to your tastes.

Personally, I'm not that much of a "stock" guy so I'd go nuts with a blank canvas like that.

Cool thing is that the company that makes the pickguard I want makes it to fit the holes on this bass so... no harm..

I am looking into the diff in sound in the three neck pickups they make... anyone play a high gain [the normal one] and toaster and even the new humbuker they make that can give me a comparison...

Then it's OOOONNNNN. That's always been my biggest peeve when I used to tweak my Fender copies; the pickguard holes weren't standardized. C'mon, is it really that hard?

Make it your own unless you're intending to flip it. I love personalized guitars, they're way cooler to me than most "stock pretty guitars".
I have the Ric humbucker (HB2) in my Jaguar Bass but I've never played an actual Ric, so there's nothing to compare it with...I can try to make a passable demo sometime if you want though.

This.

And another vote. Seeing pics of it being restored or Mudfuzz'd it will be equally :!!!: .

Or just send it to me, and I'll send you an Epiphone Les Paul bass that actually works. :p

normally i'd say "chop it all the fuck up...go the full Lemmy." but given that it's a 70's 4001 in what looks to be reasonable condition, chopping it all the fuck up would be the equivalent of taking bricks of $20 bills and chopping them up. seriously: if you found a gutted 50's Les Paul or 60's Strat, would you put EMGs and a Floyd in it? if you really want a customized 4001, get a new or new-ish one, or one of the copies, and fuck IT up...you won't lose nearly as much resale value. they aren't making any more '70s 4001s. restore it, and then when the inevitable comes and you have to flog it you won't be weeping because you left 50% of the potential value on the kitchen table when you were modding.

OK... so you and teef sort'a miss where I am going here so let me say this clearly NO WOOD WILL BE REMOVED, I KNOW WHAT I AM DOING! All I am talking about are the plastic parts which screw on... and which neck pickup do I want.. I just don't see the need for a real logo inless I sell the thing and I have seen picks or 64 4001s with tri inlays and the long guard. The thing with going full Lemmy is T-bird pickups that sound like real T-bird pickups cost a shit ton and if I wanted even more of a T-bird sound then my Flying V already gives me I would have bought a T-bird :idk:

Also there is a bit minor repair I need to do which is two of the inlays are cracked and it NEEDS fret work.

As for neck pickups there are actually five options: three by RIC and Bart makes one and SD makes one.
