Are there somethings you just can't/won't do?

covering a song is OK by me, i like doing it sometimes... however, being in a cover band is different story and something i could not/would not do...ever.
i've been in bands where ever time we'd play a certain club. we'd do a different weird cover...anything from zappa to robyn hitchcock to plasmatics to stevie wonder. we'd always do it our way and it always went over like a muthafukka.

Covers can be cool if you:

1. Don't choose a band's most famous / iconic song. Obscure is usually better.
2. Don't choose a song that the original version is so good, that you can't top it.
3. (Most importantly) Change the way the song is played and MAKE IT YOUR OWN. (For example, choose a song that's NOT from within your band's genre, and adapt it into your style.)

Problem with my hometown, is that we have 90,000,000,000 (a lil inflated) guitar players and NOTHING ELSE.

That's it.

I usually practice cover songs or sometimes even reherse some covers (a lil Otis Redding never hurt) but I NEVER play them onstage.

I just remembered something else I never could be able to do.....

Have a pedal board with more than one row of effects on it. Mainly because I'm the lead singer in my band, and I cannot imagine accurately steeping over my fuzz and worrying about hitting a second row of pedals. I'm just guessing people that set their board this way don't sing constantly in their band/project live? I play without a pedalboard (about 3-6 pedals usually) and I usually keep my main overdrove and main fuzz close to the mic, and the others sandwiching them. I'm getting a board soon and it seems I'd have to put the one pedal I have on all the time up in row two. And maybe an effect that i only turn on for solos/breakdowns/etc.

But yeah i guess the main question is do you 'three/two row pedal board people' sing a lot in your band/project?

I can't imagine myself playing a stratocaster and fast solos or shredding ...YEAH... (I won't go into pointy guitars subject this time)
But that's just me... btw,there is not a thing that you can't play...when you start to play,you look up to the music that you love...and if you put enough effort and love into it,you're gonna be ok and do exactly what you want.

I can't shred, and have no desire to ever be able to.
I can't play pointy guitars- people get impaled.
I can't play short scaled guitars because it causes my arms and hands a lot of discomfort.

If you would see my hands,you would probably laugh your ass off...and I only play my vintage jag .Seriously,though...i sorta don't have fingertips,my fingers are probably THE fattest possible...they end like they're cut with an axe...square shape/wave

It's the limitations I talked about in your thread where you asked for an advice on how to play with your cut finger...it makes sense to me after all this years with my jag.

I have a friend who's fingers are like that, and he plays shorter scales and can shred like a mother fucker. My hands are huge, though. On a 25.5 scale, I can stretch from the first fret to the fifth with no problem, using my just my index and ring fingers. I really should learn to use my little finger. I guess the main problem with shorter scales is I'm expecting the frets to be in a certain place, and I end up hitting the wrong fret or causing horrible buzz.
Oh, and about my finger, there's enough of the palm-side of it left to play with it with minimal discomfort. The bandage is kind of lame, though and gets caught on strings and causes squeaks much like you'd hear from ribbon wound strings. I pretty much just clipped off the backside, the very tip-top and some of the nail. So, I should be playing normal by this time next week. ANy other problems with it, and I'm super gluing the fuck out of it.

My good friends call my hands shovels,and the others are afraid to call them by any name (I'm no macho bullshit fighter guy by any means,but I'm really big ).I'm not ultra tech player either,mostly into big riffs and drone chords & solos...but I like to be accurate in my playing,and I can do it,to mention it again-after all this years.I like to think that if you bond with the instrument,it'll reward you big time.It's the love that matters...of course,I can totally understand that some people can't or won't do that,and would rather go for something easier to play,it's all good if you ask me!

I love and live for big riffs and with all the doom stuff I've been writing for this new band I just joined, I've incorporated a lot of drone into my playing. It's been a fun and great learning exercise, stepping out of my normal regiment of grunge and black metal. I totally agree with bonding with your instrument. I've never taken a lesson in my life, I've just sat around, doodling on the guitar and watching/ listening my favorite bands play and learned everything I know that way. Hasn't failed me, yet. Interesting fact - I learned power chords from watching the movie, hype!
