Recording scratch tracks

Post by Baxandall »

When you guys record scratch tracks with a drummer what do you guys use to go direct? A Pod, a Trademark amp or similar, a direct box?

I'm preparing to do some band recording Monday and I have one guitarist who will be going direct from his Line 6 jobby amp but I don't have anything really to use. I was thinking of just using a tube mic pre and my pedals. Do you think that will provide enough gain for the drummer to hear me?

Remember this is just for scratch tracks to get the drums recorded.

I saw this picture of Hendrix, all he used was a wah.... And not even the Jim Dunlop Jimi Hedrix wah, just some old thing.....
Jimi didn't realise the horrible tone suck we had to listen to every time he used that wah.

i play my normal effect chain and then into --> a tube preamp pedal (clean!) and drive with this --> a DI-Box with speaker emulation (Behringer)
--> into the recording preamp/soundcard what ever
out of the sound card into a headphone amp and then to my ears
works for me quite good

btw: we have click on the headphones too

Hmmm tube pre into a di. That's something I'll try. I didn't consider that. Thanks Univalve!

I'm not sure we'll click track or not. Probably should if the drummer can hang...

Turns out I may not even need to be on the scratch track if the other guitarist can play the songs without me.
