I have a song i'm working on that has an intro/between-verses 3-chord passage that i can just play for hours and hours, whether on electric guitar laden with the kinds of effects i intend to use on the final recording or on 12-string acoustic. just Gmaj7->Bbmaj7->Cmaj7, over and over again, like waves lapping at the shore.

I've experienced things like that recently too
It can be very relaxing to just zone out and let the chords develop however they want to...can lead to some new song ideas if you sorta go on autopilot like that.

I know exactly what you mean... alot of my friends go back to uni so I get left to drink on my own... go with a book or some earphones and drink till you can talk to random strangers, even some older people can be fun... or go when a band is playing and get hammered... basically pass the time 'till you get drunk and then just talk to people.

And take up smoking and always have a lighter, that helps too...
