MK1 Tonebenders - Who makes them?

Post by dorfmeister »

Supposedly used by the Beatles.....also Jeff Beck and Mick Ronson....a big part of his sound including his work on Ziggy Stardust with Bowie. Doesn't seem like too many builders are builing them ....DAM is of course..... Dam 1965

I like the looks of the Ghost Effects Doombender

I would have recommended Ghosteffects and D*A*M so I don't think I'm not much help. :idk: i know this one guy in Finland has made a few for about 100€ but I believe You'll do better by asking over there...

Tommy at Lumpy's Tone Shop used to do tonebenders to order, but it says on the site he's all but stopped, presumably to focus on his original designs, and props to him for that I guess. Hudson Electronics seem to do a pedal they call a cross between a tonebender and a fuzz face, and I think they do custom stuff too (it's all pricey). I guess most builders who do clones would make one as a custom job.

I've been thinking about getting a doom bender recently, they look hawt and are a fairly reasonable price, it'd be cool to see some more alternatives.

I had one of his Tonebender MK2s (under the Led Bender moniker) for a while and it was a decent pedal though I sold it off pretty quickly.

I've seen at least one Tonebender MK1 he did on e-bay being sold at a prohibitively expensive price (upwards of $350 bin if I remember correctly).

Why are these always so expensive?

I suppose it is the rare nos transistors combined with some kind of aura of genius that surrounds certain builders....David Main, Skreddy, etc. I never thought that Lumpy's Tone Shop had that kind of aura, though.....and who knows if that $350 pedal sold?

they're apparently a lot more difficult and annoying to tune than the other tonebenders

DAM 1965 -- but he stopped making them, so they're hard to find and expensive (but great).
jerms -- Jim Roth from BtS -- he did a couple of runs of these. Best fuzz I've ever played.
Pigdog
Skinpimp
Ghost
Stuart Castledine MkI (Doh, I haz one of these. You're right, it's a Sup MkI  )
Creepy Fingers has done some too
Also Paisley Tubby -- I had a MkI, but traded it out when I got a custom Vibra Fuzz -- clone of the old Psychedelic Machine -- with a MkI/Univibe instead.

DAM/Jerms/Pigdog are pretty no-can-has.
I think Castledine is still taking orders on his Supa MKI (a slightly different flavor MKI)

Ghost Effects
Fuzzfaceless
Skinpimp
Creepy Fingers all have production MKI's...ghost also makes the doombender which just adds more bass for teh heavy I think?
