How to switch transistors?

Post by jfrey »

I thought I had seen a thread on this a while ago but I couldn't find it.

How do you wire a switch to swap between 2 different transistors?

You can either use a 3PDT Toggle with a Transistor on each side and the three centre wires going back to the board (The easier and cleaner way in my opinion)

Or you can wire a DPDT and tie both Bases together as a Common lead back to the board and just switch between the Collector & Emitter of each transistor on either side of the DPDT.

If you needed to swap more than one thing, could you not use a 3pdt, wired like a dpdt, and use the extra lugs for a second component?

Yes you could :thumb:

Dunno... what's the pedal? Try an MPSA13 for some ultra high hFe.

It's an overdrive / fuzz.

Here's everything I have:

MPSA18
2n3906
2n2907
2n4403
2n5089
MPS2222A
2n3904
2n5457
MPF102

I also have 2 that I'm not sure what they are. They're 2 or 3 times bigger than any of the others.

I'd go with either the MPSA18 or 2N5089.

Any idea what these big ass ones are?

One says 34398P on one side of the top, and 6532 on the other side of the top.

The other says 112001, and VFE.

Maybe it's a 2N6532? That's an NPN Darlington power transistor. They're in that bigger package with the mount for a heat sink..

I googled the 112001 and got a bunch of stuff about 9/11, so I think that second one might be a terrorist.
