What to ask potential guitar teachers?

Post by mathias »

Hey guys,
You're always a fount of knowledge, so I figured you could help out.

I am trying to find a guitar teacher, and there's lots of options, but I'm having a hard time telling if any particular teacher is going to be a good match. Certainly there's asking them how long they've played, what genres they play, what formal training they have, etc. Some teachers post videos of their band playing, which is neat, but doesn't really help me.

What else can I ask a potential guitar teacher on the phone to weed out folks I won't learn anything from? Also to figure out whether they know their stuff or not? Thanks in advance! :joy:

Ask them if they can teach you how to play like a hybrid of john mayer and ynigfnadfyuakfl malmstein and, if they tell you to fuck off, they're a good fit.

Just pick a few to have lessons with and you'll find the right teacher, but also I'd ask around and find out what you can. Also when ou get your lesson pay attention to the gear that he/she has and how they treat it.

Most of the guys that seem to know their stuff aren't actually into rock guitar that much. That is, there's a lot of classic rock guys that play Zeppelin and teach guitar, and that's cool.. but I've noticed that the really good teachers are the ones that play jazz or folk/roots music when they perform. Fuzz/tubescreamers question is irrelevant to playing jazz; it's all about the fingers there ;)

Jazz is COOL.

At least I thought so when I minored in Jazz History.

I think it was all the Dave Brubeck my dad played when I was a baby. He was one of those white college kids that listened to Dave Brubeck in the 70's. Of course the real jazz cats claim those white college kids stole their music.

Studying jazz is actually a great way to learn how to play rock. You'll never need half of what you learn, but jazz is cool and you'll be able to understand the theory behind what you're playing (which is the most important thing when playing and writing music).

Yeah, only I learned history, themes and important people, not necessarily technical stuff related to playing guitar. Oh well. Oh, and I listened to a lot of jazz on a nice loud hifi stereo, over and over again :thumb:
