The forums I frequent seem to say the opposite. I hear nothing but good things about the CE-2. Also, having a DC2 or DC3 would be pretty awesome.

I actually have this pedal. I don't know if Jacob built multiple pedals with that finish. If not, then that's my pedal... it's been a little relic'd since that photo. I'm a big fan of EHX modulation, so I thought I would love having a Small Stone, but it hasn't kept me from wondering about other chorus pedals. If you're going to go the EHX route I highly suggest you try to pick up one of Jacob's (JMK Pedals) builds. It's going to be more solid and reliable than anything EHX is putting out. Plus having a depth knob, instead of a toggle, is very nice. I keep going back and forth over if I want to hold on to mine. We shall see.

I used to have CE-5, I wasn't a fan. (I'm not much of a chorus person though). CE-2 is known by gear nerds as being really good. So if you find one of those, you may be happy with it. I used to also own a red witch empress chorus, it's on the pricy side.
I've heard good things about the EHX one's. What about a BYOC chorus, have you considered that?

Supposedly the BYOC chorus is really quite good:

Re: What's the best Boss chorus Pedal?
Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble and CH-1 Super Chorus used to be analog. They changed to digital at some point, though. There's a way that you should be able to tell by serial number, as Google will tell you.
I've had an analog CH-1 and have a Starcaster Chorus (a modded CE-5). The Starcaster is quieter than the Boss was. Both are shimmery, etched sounding things, not particularly warm. My Guyatone MC-3 is capable of a more Univibe-ish swirl and pulse sound on the low mids, adding a warmish smear to the sound, but it doesn't do the shimmery thing nearly as well. Can't tell you where the CE-2 fits in here.

In my experience the only thing that the CE20 was good for was making weird sounds in a feedback loop.

I had the Fromel version of this, do not want.
I read great things about the CE-2; I think I've only seen it used live once, and it...definitely sounded like a chorus pedal.

Allow me to step in...
CE-2 Goth Metal, Liquidy Tones? Then this is your bitch.. very nice
EHX Small Clone - Warm... tasty... think Nirvana, Pantera & Metalicca (Obviously masses of bands used it but they made it famous)
BOSS DC-2 - 2 Choruses at once, crazy pedal, highly sought after, nice, but i'd call it more of a 'thickener'
BOSS CE-3 - Generally disliked, could work for you but... i'd avoid it
EHX Nano Clone - Cheap but known to have a known high noise floor and basically suck
EHX Neo Clone - The Nano Clone, like a budget Small Clone, very nice by all accounts...
MXR Micro Chorus/ Original, meant to sound great/ new version meant to sound great but you only have one knob, i'd avoid it unless you know it's the sound you want
EHX Clone Theory - Original, Noisy (dependant on version) but cool, lots of sounds... new version, digital and by all accounts, kinda poor...
I give in for now... that's alot of the popular ones though.
