Recommend a compressor!

I know this isn't quite the compressor crowd.

Here's what I'm after:
* not noisy
* country toanz
* plays well with other pedals
* cheap (in the <$140 range, at least, if not <$100)
* simple and sounds good on most settings is always a plus.

BYOC 5-knob is pretty cool. Not the simplest, but not difficult to dial in either.

I'd try out StopReferencing's JangleBox he has for sale. Don't know why he's not trying to pimp out his pedals. haha. I'll just have to do it for him.

I know the Boss CS-2 was pretty hot for session guitarists here... or maybe a modded (Monte Allums perhaps) CS-3. I hear good things about the Barber Tone Press too.

BYOC 5-knob is pretty cool. Not the simplest, but not difficult to dial in either.

I was going to add that I built a BYOC Ross 3-knob and it never worked, so I didn't want BYOC. Plus that kit is double the cost of really cheap compressors like the Rogue.

Maybe the Barber Tone Press or a used Boss CS-3 if I can find one. Dunno. I need to play them, but first I need to learn how to dial in a compressor.

Edit: The Tone Press apparently gets rid of the issue of "attack pop" that most other compressors have. Anyone have experience with this?

MXR dyna comp in any of their variants

I use the standard one with monte allums mod.. cant get more country than that

My CS-2 was great before i off-loaded it. Highly recommended. I'd like to pick up a script dyna comp, now that I think about it. Or maybe a Whirlwind red compressor. hmmmmmmmmmmm

not a pedal, but the dbx 163 is stupid simple (1 slider, auto leveling) highly regarded half rack compressor. i've got mine for around $50-$60 on teh bayz

+1 on the dyna comp. was the only compressor i've ever dug on my guitar, but that was mostly cause it made it sound noisy dirty and staticy, like tape hiss. but that was probably more due to my actual setup than the dyna comp itself.

hahah I was trying to recommend within the price-range! The Janglebox is definitely pretty neat, I've been using the Mad Professor Forest Green CB more lately. I'm REALLY into that one right now, but the used prices people are getting for them are downright idiotic.

You might be able to find one of those 5-knobbers pre-built/used...? I really like the tone knob. The Wampler Ego Compressor is kind of a slightly-nicer version of the BYOC 5-knob, but those go for $160-ish used. I've heard good things about the Tone Press as well, but I like there to be some sort of EQ flexibility on my comps.

What do you get with a tone knob on a compressor? Just overall tone shaping, or is there something to compressors that it helps with? For example, I've read that a lot of compressors sorta kill the treble notes while the bass notes stay boomy, and I'd like the opposite, to get a much stronger, consistent solo/lead sound out of the high strings.

I fucking HATE when this happens, and tone-knobs on comps often fix that problem. For me. I had an Analogman Mini-BiComp, then tried a large-box BiComp - this is exactly what happened on the Ross side, and I couldn't stand it.

one more for the DynaComp. it's just too difficult to make them sound bad. simple and effective.

Toadworks Mr. Squishy is simple and effective, but not as cheap as a CS-3 if you're just looking for an introduction.

I used my friend's briefly - didn't sound BAD to me, but the way he used it was more as a filthy boost. I'd say if you're ready to mod it, go for it.
