Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

Post by Psyre »

I stumbled across a guy selling a 40w hot rod deluxe and I'm extremely tempted to buy it. He is asking $350 is that a fair price. He says it's hardly used and in perfect condition. Obviously I would play on it to make sure.

That's pretty cheap.
I still wouldn't go for it though.
I've played a lot of them and I haven't liked any of them.
A lot of people say they're good pedal platforms though. :idk:

Tis true.

I think it's a good price. Clean channel on those definitely sounds good, "overdrive" channel sounds like dogshit. I don't know how much difference there is between mexican and american made HRD's sound/quality wise but yeah, I guess it all depends on what you're intended purposes are for the amp. Mine's just a practice amp and in that respect I'd say go for it, outside of that I'm not so sure...

Well it's mainly appealing because I have only used solid states, and for the price it seems like a great intro to the tube world I've longing to live in. I currently practice on a fender blues deluxe reissue and was wondering how it compares to that.

I like mine; I'm even one of the wierdos who likes the drive channel at times.

It lives on clean 99% of the time though, and yes, it takes pedals very well.

It's the first amp (and I've had it 10 or so years now) that made me stop missing my old '64 Bassman.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.

I played with a guy who used one--great amp, plenty of volume, nice tone.

it's a decent amp, but it's an "intro" to tube amps amp. there's better stuff out there for the money that you'll probably want to keep around for longer. i've got nothing against the HRD but i ended up choosing a vox ac15 in a head to head comparison.

Wait... isn't your Blues Deluxe a tube amp? I have a tweed Fender Blues Deluxe 40W that I bought for $200 from a guy I used to play with. I've taken it everywhere and loooooooove it. Pedals sound friggin' GREAT through it. The overdrive channel is titties, but I never use it unless I'm recording.

I play on a Hot Rod Deluxe the other day and was surprised at how bad the overdrive channel sounds to my Blues Deluxe. I'm not totally sure where mine was made, but I think it's an American. Had to switch out the tubes twice, but shit... $200 for this thing and it's lasted me forever.

So again... do you have a tube Blues Deluxe? If so, you're not getting anything extra by buying a 40W Hot Rod... just a murky overdrive channel.

No I just practice on it at our practice house. The guy let's me gig with it but I don't like using other people's gear. I got it down to $300 and still really considering it.

$300-350 really is a good price on those. I will say though, I used to have a Hot Rod Deville, and I don't think I'll ever go back to the Hot Rod series. I don't know how much of it is "been there, done that" or me really not liking it. I got a lot of use out of it, but after having and playing other amps since then, I probably won't ever buy another one.

Like Max was saying... for entry level tube amps, there's much better sounding stuff out there. But again, that is a pretty good price you have.

Good price, good amp. I've been thinking about getting rid of my 80w for that jammer. Just curious about the clean headroom, but it does sound great and allows pedals to swag it the fuck out.

300$ is a VERY good price! And like other people have said, this will make a great entrance to the world of tube amps. If you use it as a pedal platform, I think you will be very satisfied.

Even if you decide to move on and find another amp, I would imagine this would be a very good back up amp or a second amp to run as stereo.

Give it a try, worst case scenario you can sell it for the same price. No loss.

You're right! I should have said 300$ is a FREAKING STEAL. I'd buy it, even though I don't need it!
