ive had some new reissue ones that blew the old ones out of the water in sound
The big difference in aged wood relates more to the age of the wood to start with rather than the number of years it's been pretending to be a musical instrument -- in ye olde dayes, the wood came from ye olde growthe forest, which has long since been concreted over and turned into a Walmart parking lot, and was air-dried for 5, 6, 10, 20 years before being turned into a guitar.
Now, the wood is cut from relatively young trees and kiln dried to get it out the door quicker -- what company is going to store a pile of wood for 10 years any more? So the wood in your 1954 telecaster was already 80 years old before Leo had it cut up; the wood in your 90s Ibanez Shredblaster though was probably only a few years old to begin with, sat in a kiln for a week, and then got pummeled into submission.

Funny, I read a paper on Stradivarius violins, where they did all sorts of weird tests on them to see why they were so good. (You want to talk about mojo parts ... :-) and they reckoned there were a few really good years of climate where the trees had just the right amounts of everything they needed to make wood with just the right Young's modulus and stuff like that. Part fluke and part skill on the part of the builder...

I'm convinced it was hip in the 70s to piss in your guitar case ... Every guitar I've ever had from that decade had a case that smelled like a Partick close on a Saturday night *

EDIT: Translation
*Partick: Slightly rough part of Glasgow, Scotland
close: stairwell
Saturday night: the evening of the day after people traditionally get paid and go drinking in Partick

Yeah, my seventies precision bass-case smelled like catpiss, very nasty, I had some deodorizers in that case for a few years.. So it has to do with the time? Or should it have been a really bad kitty

Idiots think anything with "Fender" on it is worth something. It's impossible to buy a used Fender guitar, or even a Squire. They call those Fenders, too. Any Squire guitar isn't worth more than $100 used, IMO.

I saw a lady in Goodwill cradling a shitty Squire between her legs like her firstborn, afraid someone's going to snatch it away.

People see my MIJ 80's fat strat, and say, with awe in their eyes, "that's a good guitar." "I mean, I'm fond of it; it doesn't play particularly well, though - it's not bad I guess.

Musicians, the lie we've been telling everyone about Fender gear (i.e. that it's good), so that we can sell it for good money, has backfired. Now we cannot acquire it.

Now you're doing the opposite. Thought like this is why I couldn't get any decent amount of cash for my CV Tele Custom. Anyone who says that's not a great guitar is totally blinded by the logo.

what's the big deal?

It's not a big deal. That's why we're discussing it on a forum instead of rioting in the streets or even posting about it on teh Facebooker.

The grey DOD 250 is my all time favorite overdrive.
I actually think it should go for more than it usually does.

I don't really understand the mentality that if something costs more than 100$ then it is over priced and not worth it?
who cares how much something is? if you don't like it, then don't buy it/ :idk:

not trying to open a can of worms here, but $400 is not a lot of money when you can turn around and sell it for just as much if you didn't like it.

honestly, i'd just buy one of the reissue DOD 250's and send it on over to Analogman for the mods he offers. you're spending 1/4 of the price and it probably sounds just as good

maz91379 wrote:It's overpriced when the total cost of components that made it is maybe $20-30 max..................... and you can make one that sounds 90% there for that cost or have someone make you one for slightly more.

Wouldn't that make every pedal overpriced? Plus I wouldn't build someone a 250/D+ for "slightly more" than the cost of parts. It wouldn't be worth my time unless everything (jacks, pots, switch) was soldered to the board. Then people would bitch about "build quality".

Plus I kinda think that circuit is underrated. I have a Distortion + and it's a great od. I don't know if I the price for a grey spec 250, but that has nothing to do with the pedal, and everything to do with all those doctors/lawyers driving up the prices by buying up all the great vintage gear and locking it away in their house for their retirement fund, instead of investing in a 401k.

Also, it's an unspoken rule around here that you're a homo and don't know how to spend your money if you pay more than $200 on a pedal that can't do shoegaze, sludge/doom or useless bleeps and screeches. :p

Kinda third'd.

I don't play shoegaze or sludge/doom and from reading here I kinda CARGO-CULTED-feel like I should be caring more about how HEAVY a certain piece of gear is when I don't need it to be. I don't really play useless bleeps and screeches, unless they're those things in the context of the music I want to play, which traditionally doesn't have those elements.

Also (double post!)

Screw the 250/D+. If you like the sound of it, build your own. If you really can't build it, you can get a EQD White Light, which sounds way better IMHO.

Or have someone else build it for you, like MadebyMike or Mike from RhythmandDetonation. Or the several nice people that will build you a BYOC pedal for some money. In every one of these cases you get the ability to tweak it and choose components and therefore sound that you want from a pedal. Way better way to go since everyone plays slightly differently, has different guitars with different pickups, and different pedals to interact with, into different amps.

Music gear is choose your own adventure, not buy-mass-market-crap. OR at least it should be. :thumb:

No you can leave it. I took a survey of all my gay friends, and they agree. They're not interested in any of that. :p
