Fuzz suggestions...

Post by Radiohead625 »

Hi guys this is my first post :hello: ... I was wondering if you could help me find my fuzz. I bought a lil Smokey amp and i really love the sound of it. Especially with just it and the guitar. Is there any Fuzz that will sound similar to what the smokey puts out? It just seems like my perfect fuzz tone, but its a little impractical as a pedal and doesn't sound as when plugged into my amp anyway. Any suggestions on a stompbox?

I can't remember exactly how the smoky amp sounds, but I know its a very simple circuit that gets its clipping from a 386 ic. Someone here could build you a pedal like that, though the smoky likely owes a lot of its tone also to the little speakers they use. My recommendation for a super simple, inexpensive, yet killer fuzz would be a devi ever torns peaker or hyperion.

Man I should be paid for pimpin Spunx...
Gnometron! It's replaced my muff, aenima and fy2.

You could get something 386 based for pretty cheap though....

Thanks guys.. it does get a lot of the tone from the small speaker. It just has a great bassy, yet spongy fuzz perfect for lead and yet articulate for rhythm. It's like the perfect blend of smooth and ratty, but again spongy. I've tried the Mastotron and it gets the great bass response and some what spongy, but isn't that great for rhythm. Lately ive been thinking about the peppermint fuzz. The muffs seem too modern for my tastes. Devi has some cool stuff, but someone said that the torn speaker is loud(whatever that means).

Maybe something from Basic Audio:

Or the Fuzzy Lady from Plum Crazy FX:

I always thought that the Smokey successfully nailed the "Touch Me I'm Sick" sound on the opening chords. I've had a Big Muff and I don't think that's it, so I'd say Superfuzz.

Judging by what you described, I'd recommend the Torn's Peaker also. The TP can be loud as hell (meaning it can give you a huge volume boost) but it doesn't have to be loud. It has a volume knob. Maybe someone said it's noisey? It is a bit noisey. That just means that when you're not playing, there is a bit of static noise. I have one though and it doesn't bother me at all. You can't hear the noise while you're playing and I just switch it off when I'm not playing.

thanks again guys i'll look into some of those fuzzes. The plum crazy fuzzy lady sounds a lot like the peppermint, but sounds good. I'll also have to check into pedals with that circuit you guys were talking about, thanks again for the help! :thumb:

Yeah it's pretty ratty with the texture knob down but with it turned up it's much more compressed and dark and not ratty. It's not very amp like though.

If you want smooth, more amp-like fuzz, definately check out a muff of some sort like the others said. I had an EQD Hoof and it was really smooth fo sho. The Musket looks cool but I haven't tried one before.

lol I'm addicted to the black keys and auerbach's vintage amp and fuzz tones... ive been wanting to get a hoof, but i don't wanna copy dan's sound, just wanna be influenced by him. I love his "till i get my way" fuzz! The Mastotron sounds pretty close to what i want(love the sub option), but i wish it maybe had a longer decay and was a little smoother with chords. What are some of the pedals with the 386 pedals besides the D.A.M?
