crowther hotcake 1977 vs 2003?

Post by multi_s »

Hi

Does anybody know if there is a big sound difference between the vintage hotcake and the new one? i found one review that said the new one is more "fendery" and the old one is more "marshally" but that dosnt mean much to me. The vintage one has a tone switch and the new one has a presence knob. I want to build one for myself but im not sure which one to pick. Basically i want to sound like deerhoof. any input appreciated.

cant help... but they old ones definitely look better. i love the hotcake, but i hate the aesthetic. i wonder how much a sparkle drive plays a part of the deerhoof tone? i think i read somewhere one of them uses the sparkle drive as a preamp sometimes.

There are two versions

"As of September 2007, The Hotcake now comes in only one version, and is internally presettable for "Normal" or "Bluesberrry" voicings, and also for the extended low frequency option for bass. The "Bluesberry" voicing of the Hotcake has a slightly less buzzy edge at the onset of distortion, and often works well when guitarists have amplifiers with extra extreme treble boost, like some Marshalls for instance."

I have both in a double hotcake, they sound quite like you mention.

I'll be selling my double HC soon, it just doesn't love my Bogner.
