different woods mos def have different tones.
ya might not notice so much if you're playing with lots of effects or with lots of gain.

+1 .... Love the looks of that.

This is my Epi LP 1956 Goldtop (black) that I really dig. Out of the box the quality was OK, but had a few high frets. After a slight makeover with fret dress/level, new nut, Lindy Fralin P-90s, and a bigsby this thing kicks some ass and sounds like a friggin dream. Plays like a high end guitar at a fraction of the cost.

Tom's guitar is absolutely perfect. never seen it before. must be rare. I have played the gibson sg special and like it. I think I've seen melody makers in p90. what about the prs starla x soapbar http://www.guitarcenter.com/In-Store-Pl ... 1796559.gc

there are so many variables in the wood used to make electric guitars and they all come into play at some point.
i agree that the whole tonewood thing is overdone. i mean we're not talking hand caved archtops where the wood is the sound.

when I pickup a guitar and play it for the first time and the wood is so complete shit. I instantly know that that guitar was made to make money. they weren't building it like you would build it for yourself. often the guitars that are made of laminate or agathis or the sap wood or wood with knots all over are the same guitars that are made quickly by inferior craftsmen who use way too much glue and fiberglass. so cheap wood goes hand in hand with horrible sounding guitars IMO. I have seen squires with nice flame maple necks. my buddy who is a fender dealer kept it for himself at cost. the thing is awesome. same electronics, different wood.

I play a G&L ASAT Special:

Not my pic, I'm too lazy to get a camera, but its that color at least. They're expensive new, but I got a good deal on an old one on ebay, and the korean ones are really affordable too. Technically the pickups are mfd's, which I guess are not p90's but I dig them nonetheless.

I am also very curious about those new goldtop tribute les paul studios too...I just saw them in the latest ams catalog and cant wait to try one out sometime.

I live pretty close to what was once a guild guitars factory, one of the factory workers made a P90 archtop with a rejected blemished archtop body. and all the electronics and hardware were from dumpster diving behind the factory. he had to make the custom pickup rings but damn that was one sexy free guitar. and it says guild on it, was made in a guild factory and never officially a guild product, and it was FREEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Did you try the 60s tribute Les Paul and/or SG? I have the 50s tribute Les Paul, I prefer the thicker neck. It's awesome.

And Santana? Pffft.

I think his genius lies in the fusion of synthesizer/guitar work he did in the studio. I would not compare him to santana as a guitarist. sanatana wins.
