Fix the BUzz! Sound gate? Supressor? Canceler?

Post by Psyre »

Lately with the addition of some new pedals, I have become more and more frustrated with the amount of buzz I get when I toggle some of them. I have gone through everything as far as re-cabling goes. I was just wondering what's the best way to cure this? Is it going to be a noise gate, or something like the EHX Hum Debugger?

First thing to look at is how are you powering them? If you've got high gain pedals on a one spot with other things, you could be in for trouble.
Do you have a compressor in your chain? Is it before or after dirt ? (If it's after, it's going to amplify any hiss regardless of what you do).
Failing that, you could try a noise gate -- I've got a couple of the old Boss NF-1s and they're OK, but it it's a serious problem there's the ISP Decimator G String, but it's not cheap, or the regular ISP Decimator. Personally, I wouldn't trust EHX to make a noise gate considering their pedals are usually the source of the noise.
You got a Big Muff or something in there too? I used ot have an old 3034 muff hat was super noisy. I did the noise gate mod to it -- killed the noise but totally changed the character of the fuzz.
Good deals done with all these guys

ISP Decimator all the way, if you need it.

A review of it will be up on my blog tomorrow

To be honest they are currently daisyed. I guess that should be my next step, maybe a voodoo lab pedal power?? Also, I do have a compression but it's after only my wah, so before all the drives.

A PP2+ will probably solve your problems, I run 15 or 16 pedals off two and it's completely noise/hum free. There's a new one out too that looks nice, name is escaping me cioks DC or something?? As long as outputs are isolated, your good to go!

It's actually the best noise gate I've ever used, I only played it in the store for about half an hour, I just left it on while trying out other guitars. It stopped the hum of the bridge pickup in a strat through a vox AC 30. I want one, perhaps two.

hmm, I hear very polarizing reviews on the Hum Debuggers, people either really like them or really don't :idk:

Yah, most everything is like that, just go get one from GC, you can always return if you don't like it. Personally I don't want to have to put all of my pedals in loop for teh Boss NS-2, adn I couldn't justify spending the money on a ISP Noise Decimator.

Alright thanks everyone PP2+ sounds like what I'm looking for, really apprecate all the input. I'm more interested in solving teh problem with the PP than masking it with the EHX Hum Debugger so that's great.

Well if there is still noise after you get them hooked up to the PP2, I'll leave you my review of the Decimator if you are looking for a noise gate: http://effectswire.blogspot.com/2011/04 ... eview.html

Any updates to this topic? I'm at the point now where I'm looking at everything from getting my guitar properly shielded (a MIM Strat), to isolated power, to trying the EHX Hum Debugger. My house was built in 1920 so I'm sure a lot of it is a crappy power supply. Also I still get buzz from my squire when going straight into the amp (no pedals in the chain whatsoever, and I've tried three different amps). I have a Boss NS-2... it's fine and dandy for a noise gate but not good for sustaining notes and them getting chopped off unnaturally. Any input or advice from the OP would be great!
