Pavement Suggestions

Post by imonthestereo »

So I'm really into Pavement (per my user title) and I'm looking for more bands along the same vein. I like some of Malkmus's solo work, but it's definitely different. Seeing as I was like 12 at the time, I listened to shitty music in the 90's. Anything cool I missed? I already listen to a little Dinosaur Jr., Guided By Voices, and have been just getting into Silkworm. Sonic Youth is cool but seems REALLY hit or miss in quality. I know some of these bands I mentioned aren't very similar to Pavement, but any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Here are just a bunch of suggestions that came out of the 90's not necessarily similar to Pavement

Built to Spill
Polvo
Desert Sessions
Drive Like Jehu
Drop Nineteens
The Swirlies
The Flaming Lips
Fugazi
Jesus Lizard

Just check out this thread....

I don't think that this thread isn't entirely redundant. Just because the bands from the "hidden gems" thread might be from the Nineties doesn't necessarily mean that they'd rub shoulders comfortably with Pavement. Let me think back to my college radio days... oh yes, it's all coming back to me now...

Now, these don't all sound just like Pavement, but I think they'd all sit comfortably on a mix with Pavement, or could have played on a bill with them.

New Radiant Storm King
Seam
Helium
Polvo
The Wrens
Silver Jews
The Mitchells
The Pacific Ocean
Versus (at least for the albums "The Stars are Insane" and "Dead Leaves" - their other offerings are great, but not quite as wild & wooly)
Unrest
Spinanes (at least on the album "Manos")
Archers of Loaf

I'm especially a fan of the Horowitz and Postcode tracks.

Check out The Fall, sounds to me like they were a pretty big influence on Pavement.
