Not so. Let's see here. The Fender Players Deluxe with Black Dove pickups specs:

Body: Alder
Pickups: Fender Black Dove single-coil

Now the Squire that you mentioned specs:

Duncan Designed P-90s
Agathis body

Different woods used and different pickups used. I'm sure the Squire is cool and all but I'll stick with my Fender. I love it.

I saw this picture of Hendrix, all he used was a wah.... And not even the Jim Dunlop Jimi Hedrix wah, just some old thing.....
Jimi didn't realise the horrible tone suck we had to listen to every time he used that wah.

hard to say without knowing what model number it is; if it's equivalent to my Tokai LPS--which is MIJ, TV yellow, all mahogany, and has a 2-piece body and one piece neck--$300 is a screaming deal. mine cost $825-ish new plus shipping from Japan.

this was one of the sellers' photos of my Tokai:

The seller said it was Made in China... It is the one in this video:

the Chinese-built Tokais are reputed to be more or less equivalent to Epiphones or other Chinese-built guitars; i'd expect them to be a bit better in terms of fit/finish. what you're seeing in the video is probably an LSS47, which according to Google has a basswood body and maple neck and sells in Japan for between $400 and $500 new. $300 might be a bit high.

Well I got out to Guitar Center today and was able to play a few different guitars: a Gibson LP Special, an Epiphone LP Special, an Epi 1956 Goldtop Reissue and the new Epi Nighthawk. First off, the Epi LP Special sucked ass. It's this one: http://backstage.musiciansfriend.com/pr ... tId=584590. It sounded really muddy and dull and uninspiring. I was hoping that might do the trick since it was the cheapest one I played, but no dice. I really really like the 1956 Goldtop. It was hefty for sure, but definitely had the sound I was looking for. It had a great neck and fingerboard, and no sharp frets/other bad signs. I almost bought it on the spot, but I need to get some more dough together first. The Gibson was as great as I remembered, but I don't know if I'd pay twice as much for it as the 1956.

The Nighthawk was kind of an odd add-on to the group. I have been intrigued by it since I saw it was announced, and wasn't expecting to find one in the store as its backordered everywhere. The finish on it was great and it had a nice neck, but there were a few things that made it not really tempt me at all. The body is quite a bit smaller than an LP which may be great for some people, but I'm kind of tall, so it felt uncomfortably small, especially when I was sitting. The horn rested on my leg, as opposed to curve. The other thing I didn;t like was the split coil sound. The two buckers sounded very weak when split, much weaker than the true single coil. You could get a wide range of really good sounds out of all the pickups when not split, so I see this guitar being a hit.

I unfortunately didn't get to try any squiers with p90s (they didn't have any), or the black dove or some other gibsons (ran out of time). I'll probably be going back in a couple weeks and I can play some more then. Thanks to everyone for their input so far!

I nabbed a SG Classic when they were still $699 for the non-faded ones, and when GC was having a "10% off one item" sale. Last new guitar I ever bought, and even though I play mostly bass now, I'll keep that thing 'til I die. SG + P-90 = the sex.

And Santana? Pffft.

My main guitar for years now is an American Dlx. Stratosonic. Chambered mahogany body, shorter 24.75 scale length, and Black Dove p-90s. That thing is JOY. One of Fender's best oddities.

I have the squier and its been the best investment Ive ever made.
It cost less than 200 euros back then. Replaced the tuners and the nut and voila!.
The neck is big and chunky. And its the kind of guitar that can take a beating or two.

I did spray the body with gold paint and see the results

Oh, I'm not saying the fender isnt awesome, Im pretty sure it is. I'm also pretty confidant the wood has nothing to do with the sound, and the duncan designed pickups are fucking great, and I'd trust them just as far as a Black Dove anyday. There's absoloutley no reason Fender couldnt just slap different pickup covers on the same magnets and wire for both guitars...
