Question for Hummingbird II users

I recently got one of these from a UK dealer and loved the sound of the thing but there was a gap in the speeds available between the two modes - in mode 1 it went up to about 174bpm at max then the minimum speed in mode 2 was about 200bpm.

E-mailed Jamie at EQD about it and he said there was supposed to be an overlap between modes 1 and 2. He said I could return it to them to take a look at which was cool but as I'm in the UK I decided instead to send it back to the dealer as they were getting a new batch in shortly. Got an e-mail the other day - they have 4 more pedals in stock but all of them have a gap between the two settings.

So the question is - how many of you guys have one where the speed settings actually overlap? Just wondering if this is common or not - having a bunch delivered with the same issue as mine seems unlucky if they are not supposed to be like that. The reason I'm asking is I'd really like to get one at some point (thought it sounded awesome) and am happy to wait until another batch comes in - I just want it to be as usable as possible.

I had one for a bit. Hummingbird II. I can't recall if it had overlap or not. But I don't think the orig poster was talking about any overlap. I think he was describing the opposite problem. A "gap", rather than overlap. No?

EDIT: Just went back and read it again. I think I get it now. You're wondering if anyone has gap/overlap issues or if their Hummingbirds are equally balanced between mode 1 and 2? I still don't have the answer for you. Sorry for writing all these useless words. Heh

Hey, just made an account to chime in. I just got an HB. Bought it new and the date inside is from 2012.

It DOES NOT have overlap between the highest setting on mode 1 and the lowest on mode 2. I was actually thinking EQD did this on purpose because Green Day's Boulevard of Frosted Creams' speed falls right in the gap. Heh.

So, there used to be an overlap between mode 1 and mode 2 on most HB's. There is no longer (or very rarely) an overlap but it's mostly due to parts tolerance. The HB uses an obsolete nearly impossible to find unijunction transistor. The first batch we had were pretty tight and most HB's had some overlap. The second and current batch of these are kinda all over the place. We try to match the slowest speed and the fastest speed rather than concentrate on overlaps in the modes. We've only been asked about this once as far as I can remember and I believe it was Jules who sent the email. We recently made a very small change that makes the distance between 1 & 2 shorter but it's not really an overlap. That's what we get for using old parts I guess. All that said, mode 2 really only exists to get the fastest speeds at the top of the dial, it was never a goal to overlap the modes but I do see why someone would want that.

Mine doesn't overlap and it's an HBII. But it doesn't bother me - I have a tap tremolo for things that need rhythmic tightness, and the HB for everything else

This is a brilliant circuit - will the pedal die when the unijunction transistors run out or will you guys be able to design a work around?

Mine previously had an overlap, but I recently sent it to Jamie and its now seems like the newer versions. While on one hand not having a full range of tempos to work with, its not really something I'll miss. And more so, I find it much easier to dial in a tempo I want because it isn't as touch sensitive.

Hello everyone! my Earthquaker Devices Humminbird 2 is already in my hands! I wait so long time for the shipping to Russia, about 3 months!!! And yesterday i was very happy by it. BUT! My happines was not so long, cause i found problems with this device:
- This pedal haven't slow rate like original vox percussion tremolo. (It is possible to decrease rate in home? I have some pedal-effects master in my city, in what part of shematic we must do some changes, or maybe replace some transistors?)
- Problem with overlapping in mode "1" -the highest rate is to slow and not enough for the so slowest rate in "2" mode!! It's BAD!!
- The light (on/off) don't blinking synchronised with rate. It's possible to upgrade it in home? maybe some add in shematic? THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING!
