The other format that English classes like to use, ALA, I think? That one hasn't even been updated for citing stuff on the web, last time I was in school and had to use it.

I know there are scientific journal citing standards are better, but still annoying.

To the point where most grad students use a piece of software that keeps track of all their citations, footnotes, annotations, and bibliography and it generates it for them at the end of the project/paper.

i've written a few papers in APA, but honestly it's just different in the way you cite things. it's more geared towards scientific papers, while MLA is pretty much what all english professors swear by. I was an english major for a semester last year, and I've written my share of both, and I can't stand either one.

My school has plagarism software that you upload your paper to and it checks it for plagarised stuff. 100% bull-shit.

This is my first English class in five years. It's not that I haven't had to write papers, it's just that in the PoliSci department they aren't that strict, and in the economics department papers are feared more than the cthulu. For citation I usually made up my own system, numbered the works cited entries, and used the numbers for in-text citation. Never got docked for it either. Fuck mla, apa, ala, and chicago styles, give me a numbered list of authors and titles and that's all I need.

I'm glad I'm graduating, but it sucks because I'm just going on to more schooling in a masters program, which means bigger more intensive research papers with harder to find resources. I'll have to look into some of those works cited programs before I start working on my master's thesis, which will likely track average income and gdp against an indexed cost of computer technology. It will need many resources

One of my buddies and I got hauled into one of my programming professor's office in my sophomore year and accused of cheating because our code was really similar. All I said was, "it was a really obvious solution to a pretty simple problem. I'm not surprised someone else came up with the exact same solution."

They even said that our method of indenting our nesting layers was too similar to be a coincidence. And we both had the same answer to that:

"Not sure if you know this or not buddy, but in CS1005, they're teaching EVERYone to use that method of indenting to make it easier to read and follow your code."

"Oh."

Neither of us got any discipline.

I'd usually get counted as 9% unoriginal for my last name being on the paper.
