Trogotronic Model 77 "Classic Haute Tension" Preamp

Post by dorfmeister »

Model 77 "Classic Haute Tension"
Efforts to continually make this exemplary (and albeit somewhat arcane) technology both less cumbersome AND less expensive yield this honest to badness tube preamp for a stinking $165 in the smallest Trogotronic tube chassis yet. The compact and economical Model 77 "Classic HT" uses a twin triode vacuum tube run at specified high voltage with user variable modulation & distortion. Model 77 adds unique electron tube artifacts to whatever ugliness you plug into her rendering same with a spectral beauty and unearthly melodic sustain be it noodling axe work, technological rhythmic paraphernalia or the most perverse tangent of audio instrumentation.

Anybody tried one of these on guitar?

HOLY POO THAT LOOKS COOL TOO! I really wanted to get into modular stuff and it looks like I picked a good time. That's the best VCO/VCA/VCF ever! So cheap for what it does! Man with all those ins and outs...so much can be done! I guess this means he'll be making some more soon?!

I want to talk about them all over the place!
Very  worthy.

Does anyone have much experience with their line? I would love to try out something from their TR Series. And those controllers are too cool.

I have the TR86 and it rules...but that's nothing like those things. They big! Someone on here has one of the Model 666s. If you want a good example of what the stuff does listen to his band Geronimo. They only have one album but it's amazing and self-titled...and awesome! When I saw them he and the bassist both using the Trogotronic gears.

I wonder if this thing is anything like the "Master Distortion" that Fennesz uses.

He talks about it in this article form tiny mix tapes.

When we were talking a moment ago about the pedals you use, I wanted to bring up the Siemens Telefunken box that you've been using.
You mean the distortion box? The custom made box? That's a very weird story actually! A couple of years ago... no, it must have been five or six years ago already, a guy from Germany drove down to Austria and came by our studio. I didn't know him and he introduced himself and said he had been building this box for me. I was really surprised, so I checked it out and it just sounded amazing. He called it the Master Distortion. It's really incredible. I think he built three or four of them; one for John McEntire (of Tortoise/Sea and Cake/Gastr Del Sol), one for Kraftwerk, and one for me. So I was really lucky to get that thing. It came completely out of nowhere, and it was completely unexpected. I've been using it ever since, and it's a fantastic box. It is built from old Siemens Telefunken transistors from the '60s and '70s.
What exactly does it do? Does it just randomize the kind of distortion produced?
It does. It does things that are completely unexpected sometimes. It's really weird and kind of hard to describe. Sometimes the effect is very small. For example, the track on Venice with David Sylvian (“Transit”) has this kind of broken guitar sound that came from this distortion box.
I was reading that you had some trouble transporting it when you were touring, so I take it you no longer use it when you play live?
That's changed now, because I've had someone build a smaller, lighter box that is transportable. I think I'll take this one on the road. The larger version looked like a bomb. I had so much trouble with airport security. It was so heavy; it was this iron box that was about 15 kilos or so. It was impossible to transport. Now it's smaller, so I can actually tour with it again.

I am wondering if any builders would find it interesting to try to come up with a pedal that could come close to replicating the sound of this thing. I am sure a schematic would be very hard to come by if possible to get at all but I wonder if listening to some Fennesz tracks where he uses it could give an idea of what sort of circuitry might allow similar sounds.

When I saw the Fennesz I wondered the same.

I'm kind of wondering why more people aren't all over these devices: Not expensive, Tube, From clips appears to sound very good + a range of tones, looks cool.

these things are really finicky. they have a mind of their own. i think most people look for something stable and something they can recall a certain sound by remembering a setting.

these things DONT do that. trogo boxes do what they want when they want. not that there's a damn thing wrong with that.

Anybody got/getting one of these? I am seriously pondering it but am a bit worried about being stuck with an un-musical noisebox. It is hard to tell from the clips exactly what one would be getting with this.
