I'm realizing that as I improve as a guitarist, I don't have to have 4 ft^2 of pedals. I can appreciate simplicity.
Of course, that doesn't mean that I'm going to have fewer than 3 dirt boxes or just 1 delay.

I noticed recently that the more I practice and improve the more mild my actual pedal settings get, still running 18 on my board but the settings are starting to change, getting more out of my hands lately which is good.
Don't have the gain dimed on everything any more. Migh tbe a sign of maturity might mean I am old and boring.

Could be you're hearing my subtle differences and nuances in the tone of those pedals as you learn them, what they're capable of, and discover what you want to hear and play.
I was a "dime everything" guy too. Most metal distortions sound terrible if you go 100% gain, treble, bass (EQ) knobs. Heck, most overdrives sound terrible if you dime them without paying attention to the pedals after it, overall gain, how it interacts with your amp..

I think an amp change has helped a ton, now using a valve Junior for practice instead of a crate power block (which was way to loud for anything useful) It breaks up naturally at a reasonably low volume so I don't have to get all my gain from pedals. Also: I think I have forsaken metal pedals entirely, trying to sell them all now!!

I wish I'd found that the Valve Junior broke up at a reasonable low volume. I had one, nearly got me evicted when we moved into our new apartment last fall. Had to sell it.

Edit: But I do have a broken Valve JR that I use as a speaker cab with a tiny solid state amp. Those Weber speakers are a-maz-ing! Super jazzy tone.

Re: Let's see your PEDAL BOARD!
Reasonable as compared to the powerblock or my 70's plush head, still pretty loud I guess, fortunately as long as the baby isn't napping I can push it a little bit.
Plus it loves pedals, so I love it!
Some of those heads with the 1/2 watt setting looking pretty interesting.

Re: Let's see your PEDAL BOARD!
I've found that scale of amp wattage -> loudness is definitely log, so 1/2 watt isn't that much quieter than 5 watts. Human ear can only hear 3dB changes as it is, and that is right around a difference in 3dB IIRC.
In any case, I'm pretty much destined to play into headphones for the rest of my lease. I don't have a practice space where I can crank it

Re: Let's see your PEDAL BOARD!
Sorry dude that is sad, You could build an ISO Box!!!
We used to have one made of old box springs in a practice space we used.
3db that's it?
That seems crazy, I am not questioning it but it seems crazy.
Yeah I think Eurotubes had something on their sight about the difference DBwise between 50 watt and 100 watt amps,
It's nowhere near as large as you would think.

The relationship between power output and speaker loudness or volume is not linear or straight (+10 watts does not equal +10 dB). For example, if you compare the maximum volume of a 50-watt amplifier with a 100-watt amplifier the difference is only 3 dB, barely greater than the ability of the human ear to hear the difference. It would take an amplifier with 10 times more power (500 watts!) to be perceived as being twice as loud (a +10 dB increase).

Then there's the science of room acoustics, material attenuation, etc.. and my walls to the next apartment are thin sheetrock, while the floor and ceiling at 15" of concrete. So the sound reflected nicely right into the neighbor's bedroom, and he or she apparently complained.

Yeah I don't miss sharing walls, thanks for the science too, that's great info.
Kindof makes a 120 watt head useless.
