Is there a fuzz with a clean attack and/or blend out there?

Post by sepherus »

Hi,
I'm a brand newbie, as long as you don't count the months I've lurked as a guest. I totally love the sounds I get out of my old beat up Russian Muff, and I want to add some more varieties to my fuzz sounds. However my current dilemma is for a group of songs I'm writing I want an amount of either clean signal blended in, or just a cleaner attack. Probably more the clean tone blended in though ala Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive, just fuzzy instead of an overdrive. Recording it won't be an issue thanks to multitracking, but live I can't make it work with a totally mono setup. I have no interest in springing for a stereo rig. Some of my friends have suggested just using a more "natural" OD of some sort (my TS7 or natural amp OD,) but that doesn't have the texture I'm looking for. I figured if anyplace would know it would be here. Thanks. I also tried using the search but that didn't work out too well.

I have 2. That and my Gnomeratron Vagina Trumpet Fuzz. Ooh and my Year4545 is being modded with a clean blend as well. Brian RULES!!! (haha so does Sir McSpunkle!)

The TAFM is brilliant, really massive sounding, cutting and versatile. The Gnomeratron VTF looks incredible, but I've never tried one myself. Or you could get a blender box and blend clean signal in with whatever you want.

Lessee here:

Smallsound/Bigsound Team Awesome Fuzz Machine
McSpunckle Gnomeratron VTF
McSpunckle Gnomeratron Mini
Malekko B:assmaster
Dwarfcraft Hair of the Dog (not strictly a clean blend as I understand, though, as much as it is a circuit to let undistorted low end through)
Wounded Paw Battering Ram (not strictly a clean blend either, but an overdrive that runs in parallel to a fuzz, so you do get both)

And as Holy Schnikes points out, you can always look for builders who will do custom clean blend jobbies. I know that Brian from SS/BS has done that with his Year 4545 before.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but I built a silicon fuzz face (the multiface perf board layout actually) and it is super touch responsive. So I can set my guitar volume and the fuzz face together to have a clean signal while strumming normally, but if I dig in it gets fuzzy. There's a difference in volume, of course, but you don't have to bend down to mix a blend knob just right, you just control with your attack.

I honestly didn't think of getting a blender box. That may be the best option. Then I could blend what ever I want! Definitely some awesome suggestions besides though. A few have some options that are way out there for me, but I can see where they could come in handy for more non traditional uses.

Fender Blender (not strictly a clean blend, 'cause it adds some low frequencies).
You're not a musician, you're a low frequencies generator!

It's a JPG, so it can't be animated.
