Lets talk about some real country.....
Alot of you might not like country but its one of my passions. I dont know if it had anything to do with growing up in the south (my mother and father are decidedly unsouthern, and i honestly hate alot of southern things) or moving back to the south after highschool but ive really taken to country in the last few years. Out of any music style you can possibly think of i believe it would be safe to say that country music is undeniably the most raped and polluted by todays consumer culture, not to mention the fox news apple pie shitgeist. Either way Im not really interested in discussing politics or or cultural gentrification I was just wondering if anybody else was interested or knowledgeable (im really not at all) in this stuff. Here are a few of my favs:

Re: Lets talk about some real country.....
I like country music a lot, more than I should. Most people hear a steel guitar and groan, and I smile. I like to get drunk and listen to country, I like to strum country on my acoustic. Nice open chords, simple melodies, it feels right you know? I do like my country a little more on the rock side of things

The jayhawks are really great! (there's a fantastic cover of this song by the thorns, which is a super group with matthew sweet, shawn mullins, and pete droge)

Early jayhawks are really lulzy, but I think it's solid

I <3 son volt! Its the other half of uncle tupelo that isn't wilco. (horrible screaming woman at the beginning). They broke up, and then Jay farrar (the frontman) reformed with a different band. They sound the same.

Gram Parsons originated country rock so they say. He's one of my favorite singers. Also best for drunk listening.

Ryan Bingham was the guy from the band in the bowling alley in the movie Crazy Heart (which you should see if you like country music). He's really good! Sorta dylan vibes.

(he fucks up at the end)Waylon jennings son. He gets a little "nashville" at times, but mostly solid. The best thing he does is put sabbath songs in the middle of country jams. Seriously its just like I-V-I-V ELECTRIC FUNERAAAAL ELECTRIC FUNERALLLL I-V-I-V
I guess this is "real" country? Ha ha.

Re: Lets talk about some real country.....
I love Gram Parsons, and particularly that song. And old CSN&Y. Or really anything by Neil Young.
Also: I like what people call alt-country now. Or they call the same music folk-rock. Which just means it isn't the current wave of country music, which is synthesized pop music with steel guitars. Beyond the mentioned Jayhawks and Uncle Tupleo/Son Volt:
16 Horsepower:

Billy Bragg and Wilco did two albums of unreleased/unrecorded Woodie Guthrie songs. It is an amazing record.
Here's a great song from it:

Uncle Tupelo

Red House Painters

Outlaw country, anyone?
Kris Kristofferson

Townes van Zandt:

Robert Earl Keen:

Love this one ^

Yeah, I dig a lot of the alt-country, I've just recently started checking out some classic stuff, Hank Williams, George Jones... country is almost as much fun to drink to as heavy metal.
Jason Molina has an amazing voice. I've been lucky enough to catch him when he swung through new zealand a few times.

Also, I really like the Drive-by Truckers, especially Mike Cooley's songs.

oh, and Townes Van Zandt was a fucking mensch.

I have to say, the Avett Brothers are one of my favorite groups, period.
This is my favorite song from them.

Old Crow Medicine Show. More bluegrass, but legit nonetheless.

Good ol' Willie.

Conway Twitty. My dad always used to sing this song. I don't know why.

I love it and I don't care what you say.

To me BJS represents "real" country more than most people. He is what country songs are about. Such a tragic life and he seems to keep on going, writing insane songs for many people. He wrote full albums for Waylon(some of his best) and I just think he embodies what traditional country was about. Very dark, yet very uplifitng.
Also......some people may joke Marty Stuart for the way he looks or looked in the 80's but truth be told that man is a country historian and musical genious. His band is of the greatest quality and he collects EVERYTHING country related. He loans all of his stuff to the country music museums and such. His latest record " Ghost Train" is a work of art. Love the dude. Hate if you want. He is the man. LOVES Fender music history and all that kind of shit. Also...Kenny Vaughn is the fucking man on the Jazzy(and anything else)
