Black Arts Pharaoh is awesome for this with the fuzz all the way counterclockwise and the gain switched to the low side. It's an added bonus that it also does a lot more.

I think you can get some pretty nice low-gain sounds with the McSpunckle And Aardvarks! with the gain down. Plus, with the switch on "no distorting the lows," you get a ridiculously full tone.

Might be a little higher gain that what you want, but I can actually say that this OD sounds better than any other one I've tried :!!!:

And it's $99!

I'm having trouble finding a low gain OD too. Too many Tubscreamer clones, and the Timmy and Klon circuits don't sound that interesting to me either.* I like my clean boost, but it doesn't have a tone control. Not sure if I even need one, but I'd like to check out the same circuit (MOSFET boost in the BYOC Triboost) with some sort of tone control on it. Looking for a tiny bit of compression, the ability to set the tone light/dark, and minimal soft clipping with a volume boost to push tube amp over the edge. The ability to dial it up into country twang territory would be great. Preserving playing dynamics is good :thumb:

* higher gain ODs, like the Devi Ever LP/KP, Dead Hipster, and further up the chain to distortions like the OCD, sound interesting to me, but they are not what I'm after right now. I'll find a decent distortion after the OD is nailed down. And it'll probaby be an OCD, because I loved the Dano Cool Cat Drive v1 when I had it, and now I want the real thing.

From Noisemakers site... The Dead Hipster is a low-gain, jangly overdrive.

It doesn't even start to get over drivey till it's at about 90% on the gain... Underrated pedal on ILF for sure...

Maybe I should go back and re-watch the video, I thought the demo basically showed it acting as a distortion. I could be wrong.

Definitely looking for something with the ability to do a dark tone. I've got a modded Sparkle Drive (JRC4558's and other fun stuff from the ToneJam guy, back in the day) which is lower gain and sparkly/bright. Not really liking that tone anymore, for whatever reason.

Singing Tree is definitely a clipping OD even when the threshold is all the way up.

Probably not exactly what you are looking for... but I like my Liquid Gain Hydra a lot:

I also looooove the Mad Professor SHOD! One of my all-time favorite low gain od's of all-time, ever! And the Distortion + and Rat at low gain levels (I own 1 D+ and 2 Rats). Great for pushing your amp.
