EHX Stereo Polyphase - help with a sound

Post by DarkAxel »

hi, guys

i'm a bit naive, i know... BUT i need help

i want to get a decent fast leslie simulation out of EHX Stereo Polyphase. It's a great phaser that provides a lot of posibilities, especially with its "Start" and "Stop" knobs to control the sweep... but frankly i've had better leslie sim with a cheap ass Boss PH-2

i found the right Rate position, but how should i "voice" it with feedback and start/stop? i just can't find it!!! if it can't be done, i'm done with the pedal

rrr s have a rotary speaker setting better than every other leslie sim I've heard

EDIT: whoops, didn't answer the question, the polyphase can do it pretty well but the rrr, to me, is better

half of my pedals are mine because of this place

i hate the Polyphase for one thing... it's so fucking practical :D it has really tweakable phaser AND envelope filter, so fully replacing it would be really bad for my financial situation... and i can't really afford anything extra, because i need my money to get plane tickets to scotland for my summer job... so if i want to change anything, it has to go, period

what about those Ibanez/Maxon Phase Tone pedals? 909 especially? are they any good for leslie sim/funky wet sounds/slow mellow phasing?

EDIT: NO, FUCK IT, the envelope filter sounds way too good, the only thing i can't get is the leslie... HELP, I DON'T WANT TO SELL IT :D

well...because of the way Rotary speakers work, there is usually kind of a 'wobble' in their sweep...you probably want mid-to-high feedback settings and maybe experiment around with the start and stop settings? the 'range' of the sweep can vary from one to another..so it's just a matter of finding what gets you close to the sound you want..

I don't know anything about the Stereo Polyphase, but the Moog Phaser has stereo outs and specific settings in the user manual to nail the Leslie sound. So yeah, there's that. Sorry dude!

OK, thanks... i tried lower feedback before, but i don't know... i'm a bit lost :D the start and stop can mess with your head

i hoped some of those who have the pedal could help me :) no offense, of course!

If I understand the circuit correctly, you could think of the start and stop as 'tone controls', because you're basically controlling how far the pedal sweeps down and up (like, if it goes wheeeOooo, how high the Wheee is and how low the Oooo is ) In fact, to get a leslie-speaker sound, you probably want a wide sweep on slower settings and a narrower sweep on faster settings..

yeah, basically you control where does the sweep take place and how wide it is :)

Hrmmmm...a good leslie setting for the Polyphase. Sell it to me,and I'll see what I can come up with :p. I used to have a Polyphase, but was too busy dicking around with the Square Wave and envelo-phase settings. Plus,at that time,I had a Poly Chorus,so that got me all the leslie toanz I wanted.

I get my favourite fast leslie/vibe-y sounds with the start about half way up, stop full and fairly low feedback. Not really a convincing leslie sim, but it's as good as I've managed with the polyphase, and it sounds pretty nice anyway.

Good to see some polyphase love :thumb: , got mine recently and it's great! I've got no idea why you never hear things about them. :idk:

yeah, they are great :) BUT i use mainly fast envelope and sine wave phaser and sometimes live i forget to flip the switch
i think the square wave phasing isn't really my thing, but still i use it in one our song :wha?:

anyway - i'm gonna try it, thanks

heh, i'd sell it to you, but i guess that's the thing i'm trying to avoid  but i'll keep that in mind

 Yeah, that annoys me a bit, they really should have put the slow envelope and square wave on the same side of the switch since I use them less. Or even better, just have two separate switches! I find the square wave sounds really weird if the start/stop range is too wide, kinda makes clicky noises and isn't very good, and really it's not too impressive all round. Everything else on the pedal is great though, slow envelope is super fun.
